Unknown year and model

Hello everyone. I am a first time poster so I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this or not. anyways I am looking at buying a old 911 ducktail racecar from a buddy as a project car and I can't figure out what year or model the car is. I know it would be simple with the vin but I don't have that either. I'm not sure if there is something special about this car or if it has just been bastardized over all these years. The reason I say that is because certain parts just don't add up. For example. I think the car is a short wheelbase as it does not have the side skirts under the doors but the two holes for the torsion bars instead. Secondly it does not have a sun roof. Third the car has the tail light that wrap all the way around the back of the car where I think most of the early short wheelbase cars had the two separate taillight on each side and the body panel in the middle. And the last thing I don't quite understand is that the front end does not have the blinkers and vents integrated into the body like the early carrera ducktails have. I'm not sure if this could posibly be a factory racecar or if its just a old bastardized 911. I will post pictures as soon as I can. Thanks

How does your "buddy" not know what he is selling? These cars have vins in several locations. If they are all removed I would be concerned about buying a car with theft history.

Post pictures of the inside of the frunk. We can tell you a lot from how the steel panels are laid.

It could be anything but it looks like a '74 or '75.

A second for Javadog. Most likely a '74 or '75. Long wheelbase. Short hood. Chrome trim. Chrome mirror. No rear flare. As you said, old bastardized 911.

That car is a long wheelbase, or at least has long wheelbase fenders. The way you tell is that the cutout hole for the torsion bar has about 2 1/2 inches of fender behind it before the wheelwell arches up. on a short wheelbase car, the fender arches up right after the torsion hole cutout. heres a pic of a short wheelbase 911- compare it to yours. Id give it a Third for a Javadog 74-75 yr!

Front tub panel indicates a "G model." Mirror (easily changed) indicates '74 or 75. The tail is not a useful indicator, since it is an aftermarket part, but the grille on it is a metal grille -- which if moved from the original car to the fake duck -- indicates '74.

So I'm going with '74. The lack of flares makes it a 911 or 911S.

thanks for posting... we all like a mystery.

What we can see from your two photos is:
The torsion bars access holes are about 2 1/2 inches from the rear wheel opening - long wheel base - so it's later than 1969. (oops I see that has already been pointed out).

The small wing windows in the doors are non opening so it is later than a 1968 - the last of the opening wing window.

Window trim is silver chrome/aluminum so that would make it earlier than the 1974 bright work change to black trim, But the black trim.... can be a bolt off/bolt on item so not that big a clue.

The front fenders and hood are short hood items - a 1974 major change - (a year after the 1973 long hoods) ...but the shapes for the closing panel is looking (at least to me) like a 1973 or earlier stamping. Are the fenders and hood updated?

Do you have a picture of the dash? The heater controls and air vent placement would give a hint as to it's age.

Better still - look for the stamped serial numbers.

Thanks guys for all the info. I've learned a lot already. I did not know that there were long wheelbase cars with the torsion bar holes instead of the skirts. Right now i don't have any more photos or the vin because the car is about 2 hours away but i can probably get them. As for the rust question it has none. The car had some bodywork done somewhere along the line but was never repainted. it hasn't been driven for at least 15 years. Another thing that concerns me is that it doesnt have a title and I know that's not a problem for a race car but I would like to be able to drive the car on the street. Is it difficult to get a title for a car. thanks again

Each state does it a little different but you get a bonded title. You go through a process where you put ads in the paper and do lien searches and attempt to reconstruct the history to the point that you prove nobody else has legal claim to the car. After a certain amount if time, the state says there's no issue and gives you a title.

I thought 1980 was the switch to black window trim, and it was an option since '78?

Either way many items can be changed over the years, however I'm also guessing '74ish

That's more or less the case. It was used on the turbos and Carreras before that. It definitely was not available on a regular 911 in 1974 or 1975.
