Unhappy 915 Trans Eval & Questions

I think my transmission is not long for this world. It's been getting more and more difficult to shift, and tonight I changed the fluid in preparation for next week's DE & time trial.

When I poured the fluid into the recycle bucket, it had a very pretty, glittery, coppery/bronze patina. On the magnetic drain plug was a nice collection of 'hair' and a couple of very thin semi-circular pieces of metal about 1/8" across and 1/32 wide. No idea what those were.

I've been changing the fluid before and after each track day.

If I were to attempt to adjust the clutch to improve the shifting, what would be the proper way to do it?

I'm thinking of getting a pre-emptive rebuild after this track day. It's more expensive when it actually breaks - ask me how I know!

When I rebuild it, I'd also like to drill and tap a suction and return line for a cooler. I don't feel it's necessary to go for the full monty spray bar and all, but the ability to circulate the fluid through a cooler would help the next trans last longer. Where are the best places to locate these?

On a humorous note. I drained the trans tonight without first checking to see if I had fresh fluid on the shelf! All I had were a few fractional bottles, so I ended up with Swepco 210, Valvoline 85/140 GL5, Sta-Lube 85/140 GL4, Sta-Lube 85/90 GL4, and Mobil 1 85/90 Synthetic...

Thinking you will make it through the DE event with a driveable car seems pretty optomistic to me ... even if you did end up with 3.2 quarts of gear oil in the transaxle!

Because of the fluid mix or because of the deterioration of the trans?

I did get it full. I'll have a small maintenance window on Tuesday when I can re-change it, but I'm out of town this weekend, without the 911.

Thom,

The gear oil is irrelevant ... the 'glitter' and 'chunks' are what concern me!

It didn't occur to me to take a pic when I cleaned 'em off the drain plug. I'll check later to see if maybe they're still stuck to the rag, but it's doubtful.
