Adding a Duck tail on a 1984 3.2 Targa

Newbie question....I was wondering if anyone has put a duck tail rear spoiler on an 84 Carrera 3.2?

Besides the painting to match, is this a DIY project? Will there be additional adjustments that needs to be made to make it fit? i.e. Locking mechanism, struts, hardware under the grill ettc...
Not sure if pre-drilled holes are already part of these packages.

I have seen a few available in another site one for $590 and another for $400. Any reviews or recommendations? Thanks in advance!

There are many past threads on this if you do a search with words such as targa, duck and tail (such as the following) -

Thanks Ronnie. I saw some of the threads, but did not really want a picture fest, but rather a thread of the typical issues others have come across when DIY ing a pre-fab duck tail. The 2nd and 4th link helped as it looks like the fitment may require more work... Sanding, adding shims, adding rubber seals etc...so that it sits properly and aligned to the rear panels.

duck installation

I installed mine a few months ago. Fortunately, the I got was made of an original deck lid and glassed duck tail on top of it so I only had minor things done like adding shims on the hinge, removed one shock strut and made my own bracket for the engine compartment light fixture. I had to transfer the latch and rubber nipple thingies from my factory whale tail to the duck. Btw, mine was painted by a body shop.

Certainly a DIY project. I bought an all fiberglass ducktail. Like with anything glass, you'll have to drill some holes and do some sanding to get it all smooth. I had to fabricate something to mount the rear evap to (short piece of PVC pipe) but I later removed the A/C.

Best solution is to have one mounted to your existing lid but then you can't go back. I think it's Sonjay (?) here on the board that will do it and the feedback on the board is all very good.

I had the body shop paint it. Very pleased with how it all came out.

I really like how flush it sits when compared to some of the pics I have seen elsewhere in the forum. I often wondered whether it was the choice brand of fiberglass duck tail or how it was installed. Btw is the grill you installed custom or universal fit? Looks sharp!

I think it's a bit of both. You have to get a good part first, that helps keep to a minimum the work you have to do to make it fit right.

The grill is from D-Zug. Pelican member "al lkosmal" might be making some too. I tried to do it myself, ordered the screen, cut it out, only to bend it beyond repair putting the trim on.

I agree that it's a DIY project. I change mine often and I have limited mechanical skills. Take your time and good luck.

I do like the looks of these, but I guess I was wondering about the "does that belong on an 84" question.
But my car isn't stock anyway and I might as well do what I like and not worry too much about what others think.
I mean come on, I have Pascha seats for goodness sakes.

Did you go with the Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass tail from Getty?

I am trying to decide between the Getty CF, and the Stratton glass over metal frame, and was curious how well the CF tail fit.

Your pic is what I want my 84 Targa to look like...polished petal wheels, polished targa bar, and the duck tail with the only exception being an aluminum look grill.

I'm doing one right now. I suggest getting recommendations and buying the right (good) tail. The one I'm working on will cost more to fix than just buying a good one to begin with. Most the tails I have seen did not fit right.

I went with FG, went the cheaper route... If I would of done it again, I would go with stratton cause of the fitment, no mocking/tinkering and prep work needed. It really is nice to have an OEM part back there.... But I was watching my $$$ since I was refreshing the whole car.

I wouldn't spend any of my hard-earned money at Auto Atlanta.

Stratton duck

I was fortunate enough to get a ducktail from Gary Stratton out of a parts trade for his piece. If I would buy one, I would still consider his product or Getty's / MA Shaw / TRE as I read a lot of positive reviews about them.
