Deck Lid 'P O R S C H E' Drilling Template and/or Measurements?

Hello. I recently purchased a 1972 911T with a fiberglass rear deck lid sans any script. I've purchased the individual 'P O R S C H E' letters as I prefer the look of the original script instead of a blank tail and would like to drill to install.

I've looked all over the forum (and internet) for a decent template and or measure guide and unfortunately have not come up with anything of substance. I would prefer a template (as I believe that will help eliminate possible crooked or incorrectly spaced letters), but at a minimum can someone tell me how far up the 'S' is located from the bottom of the deck lid and the spacing between letters. I figured if I can't find a template, I could always start w/ the 'S' on centerline and work my way out.

Any info/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a stock decklid without script sitting in my garage. I'll take some measurements for you tomorrow

I went through this same search about 6 months ago... until I recently changed my mind and ordered a PORSCHE vinyl sticker for the decklid from Bob Tilton lol.

I spent HOURS researching the same thing and dug up some ancient info on the forum (and others). I am afraid I do not know who to give credit to for this photo originally (or WHERE I even found it) but it should get you pretty close to accurate and certainly close enough to look good! You will just have to extrapolate the location of the holes from the location of the letters and the pins on the back of them...

Good luck with the drill

How about..... cut out a cardboard strip and push the letters into it until you're satisfied with the layout. then, lay the cardboard over the rear deck and transfer the holes with a pencil / pen to the deck for drilling?

I took some measurements of the holes tonight, the hole diameter is 3mm.
All the measurements are taken from the edges of the decklid to the centre of the holes

Camera battery is dead so here are some crappy ones from the iPad

Wow...awesome guys, thanks everyone for all the info/pics. I'm going to make measurements and also use the cardboard idea (although I'm going to go w/ paper in order to help provide some level of flexibility to try and match the curve of the lid).

I'm still a little shocked there isn't a company that sells a drilling hole template as ideally that would be the easiest...guess I'll just have to create my own template. Again, thanks to all for the info and help...this one thread has provided more info than I've been able to find on the whole web for almost a week.

Cheers!

...one last thought... if you're around other Porsches ( breakfast club, social, etc.), ask if you can tape your paper strip over their letters and lightly trace the letters onto the paper. That may be the most accurate.

I hear ya...unfortunately I don't get out to any events due to the fact I work Fri-Mon...so my weekends are taken up at the office (and my "off" days I'm Mr. Mom raising 2 boys under the age of 4)...so it's a challenge to say the least to get my eyes on any other vintage 911's (unless I see them on the fwy).

Thanks again to all for the info...planning on attempting to tackle this task sometime w/in the next few weeks.

If someone has a lid with no letters mounted, you could also do a pencil tracing (basically rub the side of a pencil's lead over the holes so they show up), and that would allow you to have a template of where to drill the mounting holes.

Alternately, some wax paper might allow one to see where the holes are located on the original lid and serve as a template if marked carefully.

I'm sure wax paper would be the best route...could place over a letter-less deck and punch holes directly. Done deal & it would no doubt be spot on accurate. Only issue there is finding a deck lid sans letters yet still with original holes...obviously easier said than done. Cheers!

There is an oooold thread on here where a few guys did just that, and someone even plotted the template into CAD or similar program, and printed them on a plotter and sent them to people upon request. I don't think he is an active user anymore unfortunately.

Someone else take this project on for the greater good! lol

I know this is an old thread, but I'm in the same boat as the OP. My painter ran off with most of my body panels (got the main shell back, thankfully), but the replacement read deck does not have the proper holes drilled.

The existing template mentioned above has already been tossed out, so I'm wondering if anyone else has one floating around?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

lazy-guy way.......

when I had to do this a while back I took the easy way out. cut off the pins and used double-sided molding tape.

decklid template

I made a template to use for gluing Porsche lettering on my 964 deck lid. It took hours of research and measuring off photos and friend's 1970 911T. Mine came out nice. If anyone is interested. cheers.
