Dashboard recover

I know, lots of posts on the topic but lack of skills I have not been able to find my answer.
I have a 1978 911 sc, with a dried out petrified dashboard that I tried to resurrect. However, I followed hints and tips and even talked to a shop that does these and basically they say the will crack again. And mine did. These images are post v cutting the cracks and filling and then a feeble attempt at coloring and matching the texture.
I broke down and ordered a PVC or plastic dash cap. My plan is to put this on top of the dash. However I still am going to cover and am trying to figure out what the original material of the dash is and where do I find it in the "cork" color.
Throw mea bone pelican brothers and sisters.

Thanks,

Gary

Check with world upholstery. They sent me a sample of brown vinyl that is damn close to my dash's color. I just have a thing or two to do before I buy the dash vinyl.

You need to remove the dash and do it right, which means rebuilding it from deep down inside the cracks...
My adventure in doing it starts at post 138 on page 7 ends on post 144 of my thread here:
Finally, back in the game!

I reccovered mine with Alcantara, couldn't be happier with the results - low glare and modern without looking out of place...

I did remove the dash, couldn't imagine doing it wthout this. Also, I didn't fill the crack in mine, I just sanded it down to smooth it out. Overall I'd say it's 9/10ths of perfect, fine for me. If I took more time I'm sure I could get it 10/10ths.

BTW, I've since covered the key bezel with Alcantara also, looks better than in this pic.

Dashboard recover

Chuck,

Do you have details on your Alcantara recover job? Really like the look and would respectfully request more info if it's not too much trouble.

Thanks Trevor

Thanks for the input. I do plan on removing the dash. A number of different theories on what to do once the dash is out.
Some say fix the cracks, put the think cap on and then cover. makes for a perfect long term solution.
Others say peel off the top cover of the dash if possible and then put the cap on then cover.

My other challenge is material. I have a cork interior and am having a difficult finding the color in vinyl or leather. If anyone has any good sources where I can order a "cork" colored material for dash recovering, or from experience, what is a great color match, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for all the input.

Don't bother with the PVC dash cap - return that thing. You can purchase a recovering kit from our host made by World Upholstery - Porsche 911 & Carrera Dashboard & Steering Column - Page 3.

They have many colors I'm sure they make the kit in the correct color. I have a kit sitting in my garage ready to be installed. Oh, and don't remove the factory cover you'll be left with a mess.

Hi Trevor -

I bought a bunch of the alcantara from Joe at Coachworks that Wayner mentions, I got the thinner of the two he had so it would stretch easier. Then I sprayed my entire dash and the back of the material with 3M spray adhesive (77). After that I spread liquid contact cement in the detail areas where I knew I'd need more 'stick'. Then with some helpers, stretch the stuff over the dash. I'll bet with work I could have stretched and covered all under the gauges pod area, but I cheated and slit the material here, covering my slits with small pie shaped pieces. You hardly notice them, the anti glare helps here.

In case it's not clear, I don't have any stitching, I just stretched one big piece all over the dash panel.

Then I kept going and covered the door inside top pieces (I have RS door panels) and the top pieces around the rear targa window - ties it all together nicely.

Thanks Chuck,

I really like the look and your tutorial looks very helpful too. Now it just a matter of finding a local supplier. I see a project approaching.

Trevor
