Adding External Oil Cooler - Question on Fittings

Hello,

I have a 75 911S that had AC but does not have the external trombone oil cooler. I'm looking to add an aftermarket front mount cooler to my car. My plan is to T into the return line to the oil tank and run -16AN fittings/hose to the front with an inline thermostat.

My question is the fittings/fitment for the return to the tank itself. At current it's just one large hose clamped on on both ends. I'd ideally like to run some fittings here, are there any recommendations? Otherwise do I do an -AN to Barb adapter or the like?

My return looks like this here:

Thanks for any insight

That's not the return line. Nor is it where you want to attach the lines to an oil cooler. My suggestion would be to buy a complete system (lines, thermostat, cooler) from someone parting out a similar 911. If you do a search here, you can find oil system diagrams for various versions of the 911.

i did the same thing to my 75 car.

i went to Partheaven in Hayward and bought the entire thing from a gently totalled car. cost me a butt puckering $900..(bet it is higher now)

installation was a snap..my most rewarding DIY project to date.

Java is correct..that isnt the attachment point for a cooling system.

Thanks - looking at this image - #4 is the return line. I'd rather not pay 900 bucks for an OEM line is all. I'll hit up elephant racing for some sort of adapter or the like.

I'm in the same boat - looking to add a front cooler to a car with no t-stat or hard oil lines. I found a lot of good information in a PDF on the BAT website. See HERE. In particular, check out the last page. To hook the AN fittings on the feed/return to the t-stat to the metric threads on the oil tank return and the crossover pipe, I believe you need to use AN-to-metric adapters.

No matter how you do it, if done properly (and you want it to be proper) it's not a cheep deal. There are ways to keep it manageable. Elephant racing makes nice finned lines to the cooler from the thermostat, used thermostats are still pricey, and the cooler is cheapest from our host in the aftermarket version. If you can do it for $900 your better than me and I'm pretty good at saving money.

There are different hoses & lines required depending on your exhaust configuration. Here's a comparison posted some time ago by a fellow Pelican............

The most reasonable is a used take-off system. I have seen them offered here on this Pelican Forum for $500 - $600 with a trombone cooler up front. Even $800 - $900 is OK if it includes shipping or you can pick this up in person. The difficulty is shipping the long tubes. The soft hoses are easy. I have lots of individual pieces and can make custom hoses if needed.

This is one of a set of hoses I make to fit the Porsche M30 Oil Hardlines up at the front to a less expensive Earls or similar auxiliary Oil Cooler having AN-12 fittings.

Its a direct fit, no adapters needed; and is crimped as per original Factory hoses.

This one is for a cooler mounted in the Front Right Fenderwell, but any length can be specified.

For details, please email me only.

Danny, you need:
- an oil tank with return line fix (picture post #4)
- a thermostat
- an oil cooler (bar- or multifin cooler)
- 2 oil lines fitting the cooler to the pipes
- 4 oil pipes (2 between motor/tank to tehrmostat, 2 from thermostat to cooler)
- a console at bottom to support the cooler (see set from pelican)

check this to give you an idea:
Oil lines and oil pipes for Porsche 911 / 930 - Elephant Racing
