Need broken mag cases

I have a bug bothering me... I need two mag cases to cut up and make a flat 8 case. I don't care what vintage they are, just need a case with a good front and another with a good back. Donations would be good . Let me know what you have. I have two good ones, I just don't want to cut them up!

Seems like the hard way to get a 3.6 (2.7/3 = 0.9, 0.9 x 4 = 3.6, see even I can do math LOL)

Why limit it to 8? 12 would be easier, less cutting. Drop it in a Beck spyder when you get done. 5.4 litres.

There was a thread a while back about a guy combining 2.7's into a flat 12, using Webers, but I can't find it. Anyone remember the thread?

don't know if he has any, but Walt at Competition Engeering in Bodfish, Calif. builds many winning track engines..his customers run on the edge of perfection..but he probably repairs the damaged cases/don't know if he can help you out, but worth a call to him..a prejudiced reply/he did the machine work on my cross country go-cart/road warrior.........Ron

The crank could be created from a billet (expensive)...or from 2 regular cranks.
If you look at 2 cranks end to end....and think about it...cut the front snout from one and the rear flange from the other...then v cut both...index them correctly...then weld them together.
Years ago, my partner and I created a flat 8 using 2 VW engines this way.
Mixed reviews on the success...it ran...not well, but it did run.
Our mistake was the indexing...we didn't account for the tortional balances from front to rear.
If we had thought of the engine as 1 piece instead of 2 to start with...I think we would have come out better.

a 911 crank has 8 mains, you couldn't use something out of a v-8, at least an american v-8 anyway. The factory ended up using a flat plane crank for the f-8 after their first two plane crank gave the engine bad vibrations. The 911 crank is a 120 deg. or three plane crank and you would be cheating a little to just add a hunk of crank at one end. It would F-up the excellent harmonics! I would either use two T cranks for experimentation as a Hirth style built up crank or go the billet way.... I know a guy..... BTW the case will probably be the easiest part of the project, the crank is the toughy!

So nobody has any junk cases around?

BTW those pics are from the Aussie 917 replica place aren't they?

A Dumb question!

How do you plan to put the two Magnesium cases together? I think that the stuff burns pretty easily, and well, right?

Bill you weld it just like anything else, well you weld it anyway! A friend that used to run the shop i now run makes part of his living by doing impossible things like fixing broken magnesium Offenhouser crankcases. There are none to find these days, and as he says a broken block can be worth 10k. He repairs them all the time, and this is no different. You must be careful not to melt it and it is also done in a cloud of inert gas to prevent any oxidation and other bad things from happening. The tough part is the mag warps a lot so a very stout jig is in order and of course final machine work to get it in spec.

Tuff, yes, impossible, no!

That's funny...I was just daydreaming about turning two V6's into a V12 the other day for my Ferrari...that I'll built someday...

Have you considered using the old cases merely as a plug, then casting a new case? It would require machining, but you could conceivably add strengthening and make improvements. Probably a lot more work than welding two halves together, but might get better long term results. Here's an example of a "homemade" engine...

Now, that is very interesting.

The reason my friend fixes broken offy blocks is the collectors want only original stuff.

That Healy block is pretty neat though..... Some people have fun jobs don't they!

I've got a couple cases! Bought a bunch of junk at auction when Paul Weird went belly up. The bad thing is I'm a long way from Indiana (Seattle area). I will go look at them later (they are not at my house), and see if they will work for you.
