Replaced my shift linkage
I have an '86 911 3.2 and was having a terrible time shifting gears (as expected). I just replaced my shift linkage using the Wevo PSJ S-2 (avail. from this site) and can say happily that it improved my shifting by probably 80-90%. I considered replacing just the bushings, but I wanted a more permanent solution.
For those with a similar problem, I can say that it was easy (I'm not exactly a mechanic). All it required was a screwdriver, a couple of metric wrenches (13mm I think) and an Allen wrench. It took about 15 minutes because I was unsure of myself and going very slow. The bushings were worn to the point that were several mm's of movement in all directions in the linkage. Anyway, the point is, if you have a 915 transmission and you have 'shift anxiety' like I did, this will likely help tremendously. Next step: install a Wevo shifter... |

I felt the same way when I put my Wevo coupler in....awesome. I am just using the factory short shift kit for now....waiting to win the lottery and go for the Wevo shifter

Guys,
I just replaced my entire set of bushings, ball cup and tunnel guide.....with Coupler Whisperer bushes no less.....and I have the Seine shift kit installed on my actual shift mechanism. It's the best 915 I've owned (4). My question: In your opinions is it worth the 2 bills for a Wevo Coupler to replace the factory coupler with upgraded bushes? Do you feel that it will improve appreciably? The Wevo is in the budget.....just don't want a sideways move. I know it's subjective but I'd love some opinions. Thanks, Scott

Personally, I had just replaced my bushings with stock ones after having non left. It made a tremendous difference. I then replaced with PSJ a few weeks later and truthfully did not make any difference. I think longevity will be the key with PSJ. Biggest improvement on my shifting was new trans mounts, new shift bushings and the factory short shift kit! It's almost a new car but not quite

4flyboy,
How difficult was it to replace the ball cup and tunnel guide (and remove and place back the console)? I'd like to do that to see how much it tightens it up, but I'm afraid I might get in over my head. Also, what do you think of the Seine shift kit? I can't personally advise between changing bushings and installing the PSJ2, but I'm pretty sure I won't have to fool with that aspect of the shifter again. It seems really well constructed. Quote:

You can do it....
Pstallo,
Don't be overwhelmed pulling the shifter and replacing the ball cup or even the plastic tunnel guide. Take your time and be methodical. As I recall there are Allen screws around the base of the console....kind of hidden. Give yourself a couple hours. The biggest challenge for me was the wiring for the A/C and stereo fader in the console. The wiring is short and it's difficult to get the console clear to work beneath. I'm no genius with a wrench and limit myself to relatively straightforward jobs however, my confidence grows with every project. This one is a 1 or 1 1/2 on a scale of 5....5 being hardest.....I'm including the bushing replacement on the rear coupler. There are many threads on this procedure so I won't belabor, do a search and far more experienced guys than I will help. With killer descriptions and pictures.....it's exactly how I did it. I LOVE my Seine Gate Shift. I bought a long throw 915 from a Pelican with the Seine modification already (welded) installed. I removed my factory short shift.....it was plug and play. At the same time I discovered a pile of rubber bits in the tunnel beneath the rear coupler and the tunnel guide completely missing. I bought a kit from Pelican and bushings from the "Whisperer". I replaced the ball bushing because I was in there. I may send my factory Short Shifter to Seine, they are offering a rebuild and install of their kit for $375. I'd like my car as close to stock as possible. The only thing holding me back.....I'm tall and like the longer lever on the long throw shifter. I don't have to lean forward to grab a gear. My next improvement project will be Porsche transmission and engine mounts and a Swepco trans oil change. Both projects that I feel that I can do myself....I hope! Lol. I'm anxious to see if this improves things even further. Do your homework, make sure you have the right tools and go after it! Scott
