Bumper mounting points! Help!!!

Upon close inspection of my '72 roller, it looks like I am missing the right bumper mounting point. If you look close to the pic, you will see what I am talking about.

The car started as a '72T and was owned by a guy who wanted to it converted to a 930 as close as possible. Does anyone know how the 72 rear bumpers mount? It looks like the ex-owner did not realize that the retrofit (if my theory is right), was half done.

In lieu of looking for a salvage part, what can I do to mount the bumper correctly?

Looks like some serious cutting and welding has gone on here - there shouldn't be any weld beads like are shown in the picture -the rear bumpers have a horizontal flange that fits up to the unibody frame and are secured with two allen head bolts into the frame rail in a vertical direction. The front edge of the bumper mounts to the tubular bracket that is in the picture. Don't know why things were modified or what bumper would bolt up to what is shown.

My understanding is that the '72 did not have the mounting section as illustrated by the left section of the rear. Hence, the retrofit!

Is this what the other post mentioned about later cars having 'safer bumpers'? I look at the right side and I see everything as being 'normal and stock.'

Yours is a 73 and I am wondering if 73 was the year when Porsche changed the design.

Any more feedback, guys? Where are all pre-73 enthusiasts out there!

The part on the left has been added. The left side should be the same as the right. The bracket on the left is designed to accept the shock absorber type of bumper bracket as seen on the 74 + cars. I just dug out my resto pics from my 72 done many years ago. I have lots of pics if you need.

I've got extensive sheetmetal pics at my site (of my '72). Check 'em out and let me know if you need any more detailed or specific pics. I had to remove that box that horizontal from left to right below the decklid latch crossmember. This is an addition for the '74+ style bumpers. You must remove this to fit a correct early fiberglass bumper or the metal center panel. The rear bumper is located on either side near the wheel arches with bent steel rods that are anchored in the longitudinals. Let me know if you need additional photos of this; I may be able to take pictures of this setup this weekend. As far as how the bumper is located in the center, I do not know. I hope someone else chimes in, as I'll be needing to know in a couple months.

Hello

Looks like someome added a 74 on lower rear end secton.

You don´t need any from that stuff as the old bumpers just bolt up on 2 M8 holes on each side.

Here you can find a link to a early 911 pic walkaround so you can see how simple the original setup was.

Yes it's True, Free 911!

Grüsse,

Help! I clicked on the site and I could not find anything showing the mounts. Please respond again! By the way, I have factory '85 front and rear bumpers to install. Is your suggestion of just 'bolting right up' still apply with '85 f/r bumpers? Thanks!

poorsha,

Thanks a million for the diagrams/pics! I'll carefully review the pics carefully. Just scanning, I am getting the impression that bumpers on earliers are just 'hanging/screwed onto the body' as opposed to my '83.

To: POORSHA, DTW, AND 73911GUY

Thank you for the extended comraderie!!!! Instead of scanning your responses (including almighty Roland), I will be reading carefully tomorrow. Too busy today due to the presents such as:

1. Custom 11 and 8 original-fuch centered wheels (with rivets) and chromed.
2. Checking my race bars.
3. Checking my coil overs.
4. etc.

Dang, I am running out of excuses to not start putting my car together. Hi! Hi! Hi! Triple Black, Baby!!!!
