6 speed with a 3.6 conversion
I have seen many posts regarding putting a 3.6 in an '89 or older car. In all of these cases, it seems that the newer engine was used with the older transmission. Has anyone done the 3.6 conversion and also swapped the 5 speed trans for the 6 speed?

I used the six speed. It was alot of work ($$$) but it is the smoothest shifting transmission I've driven. Rear torsion tube needs to be removed, and read suspension converted to coil-overs. I chose this route because my 915 needed a rebuild, and I got a great deal on the 6 speed.
Would I do it again? probably not. The gearing is lousy for the tracks I drive. There isn't a straight long enough to get into 6th gear.

I think a fair amount of people has dumped a 6 speed 993 gearbox into a 964, but not pre 964 cars.

As Alan points out, it's a very nice box to shift, but it's still not a perfect solution.
If you're putting a 3.6 in an earlier car for track use, the gears are too tall. You can get a custom-geared 915 with all the bells and whistles for the same money. If you're putting a 3.6 in an earlier car for street use, then it's great -- but it's very expensive (unless you have an 87-89). Patrick Motorsports has all the parts.

87 was the first year of the G50 tranny. (EDIT)

Here is a pic of a G50 5spd and a G50 6spd
![]() Note the extra length, which will require the removal of the torsion bar tube & torsion bars, installation of coilovers, reinforcement of the supension via full or semi tube frame. Here is a virgin G50/21 6spd the front mount also needs some work for use in a 911

I stand (sit) corrected. Never did claim I knew what I was talking about, though.
