newbie reading material...
Hi, longtime lurker here. I'm finally able to think about seriously making my first 911 purchase (trying to sell my track toy M3). I've been reading through the tech articles here, and ordered the 101 Projects and The Used 911 Story books to read while on vacation next week. Can you recommend anything else?

What year(s) interest you? I'd grab a book on whatever fuel delivery system your model will have (MFI, CIS, EFI…) just to understand basics for trouble shooting. Outside of that this forum is really remarkable for the depth and scope of shared knowledge. Personally, I have found the search function difficult to use and default to Google adding "Pelican" at the end i.e " steering wheel wobbles Pelican".
I am a 930 guy and spend most time on the supercharging/turbo board. This 911 board is most active with the greatest number of topics covered given number of participants. If you have questions first search then ask. Also, if you can, join your local PCA chapter and get one or two auto cross or DE events in. Great way to learn your car safely and meet enthusiasts in your area. Good luck in the hunt (it's nearly as good as seeing the car in your garage) |

prior to purchase I'd get a book on different model years, and various things to look for - Peter Zimmerman has a book, and I think Excl. magazine does too
Frere's book is the best discussion of the 911 and its evolution |

Porsche 911 Buyers Guide Learn how to Inspect a Porsche 911911 Secrets
I got the 3.2 buyer's guide while looking for my first 911 in 2012. It was very useful.

Peter Zimmerman's book really helped me. Randy Leffingwell's book was also good.

I consider the following a "must have" - lots of good info on historical development, model differences, vin decoding, etc. (in other words, more than "tech info" - lots of that, too).

The Bentley Manual is another one to have next to your 101 projects

My recommendation is to ask lots of questions here. I received a lot of help before (and even more after) from the great folks here.

If you're looking to get an SC definitely get The 911SC Essential Companion. I also found How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines 1965-1989 to be helpful. Pretty good tear down and points out problem ares and how to fix them.
Everyone says (like zombies, it seems) "get the Bentley". I have found the Bentley to mostly gauge and sometimes wrong. Most if not all the information captained in them is on the net. The same went for my E36 M3. The Bentley was good but not as great as everyone praised it to be. Just MHO. Good Luck on your 911 search. Mine literally fell into my lap and I could not be happier. Well I mean if it was an RS or a 993... I wouldn't kick them out of bed.

I found the parts catalog to be very helpful, with the parts diagrams and part numbers. I came across a PDF for it on this site.

I think the Origin of a Species book is fantastic - and of course the full bentley book is no brainer. Agree with all the other suggestions.

Got 'em all , get 'em all! You can't have too many books.
