1979 fan pulley nut quest

1979 sc -Outer half of fan pulley came apart and ruined nut. Have new pulley and shims - can't locate correct threaded nut. Have tried a 16 x 1mm from Fastenal too fine 16-1.5 better but doesn't fit. What else can it be?Threads on shaft are in good shape. What's left of original nut goes on and off fine except it is now round. Engine number is 6290829 I was told it was a 3.0 but previous owner has passed away .

There will be others piping in because there was an article on PP about recutting threads to a 5/8 die. Dont hold me to the size becuse its trivia information from reading a post.
I have seen the fine thread recut though.

The host describes nut as 16 mmx1.i already Bought five 16mmx1 nuts and tread is different. Is this the ONLY size that has been found on these?

the stock alternator shaft/nut thread used until 1981 is 16 x 1, however, that changed to a 17 x 1.5 in 1982. your engine number indicates a 79 SC engine, but is it possible that you have a later alternator in your 79 SC?

regards,
Al

I went through this ordeal about four or five years ago. I ended up finding the correct nut at a local business that rebuilds alternators. I think I started a thread about it here on PP.

Thanks I have read through that link. 16x1 is too fine - I might try and I.D. the tread pitch of what I have left. It must have been re tapped.

I had the same problem. Ended up finding one here on Pelican used parts thread. Then the guy rebuilding my Alternator at Lehr Auto Electric in Sacramento gave me one he had stashed.

If you have a thread gauge, ought not to be too hard to check the thread pitch on the alternator. And measure the OD of the threads and the ID of your nut to see what matches best.

I went to two machine shops today. The nut that fits my shaft is metric 1.5 tread pitch. We did confirm that the nut is not 5/8 anything.I measured the diameter of my shaft at 16.84mm. Spent a hour digging at our oldest and only alternator shop for right fit- using my "round" nut on existing alternators . Close but none fit. Fastenal doesn't list a 17x 1.5 nut. The employee called some suppliers and struck out. At this point I'm wide open for sane suggestions. Trying to get every thing done for a road trip to Amelia island. I want to touch a million dollar 73!

According to the Porsche PET Catalog the '79 alternator nut is supposed to have a M16X1 thread, P/N: "901 603 905 00". That nut was changed in '82 to a M17X1.5 nut, P/N "928 603 904 00" .
