Spark Plug Wires - When to replace them.
How can you tell when spark plug wires need to be replaced? I have an 1985 Targa with what appears to be OEM wires. While the sheath insulation is not damaged or cracked some of the rubber outer covers on top of the fan housing are cracked, missing or broken. I just replaced the rotor and cap with OEM. My mechanic said the wires are fine since they do not appear to be arching, however, I could replace them for cosmetic reasons.
What should I look for to tell me it is time to replace them, other than for appearances. Also, what wires are recommended. The OEM are always preferred I know, but can they are pricey vs. the alternatives. I do not want to skimp on cheap ones, wondering if other wires besides from OEM are recommended that perform as well, or better. Thanks. |

I did the Beru wires from Pelican. PO put some red ones in there and I changed them out at when they had 60K miles on them. Having flown helicopters my whole life, I lean more toward changing things out at time or mileage intervals even if they are working. Cheap insurance from getting stuck on the side of the road in the rain at night in an unfriendly area short on cash and late to something important.

I have read post were guys say if you run the engine in the dark.
Open the engine lid and you will see the arching ("fireworks") if there is any. |

if in doubt - change it!
i used Beru from Pelican also, fit perfectly, look nice no point just doing the cap and rotor if you are troubleshooting, change the plugs at the same time and you'll know that your ignition side of things is sorted
