good luck.

Floor pans are slightly swiss cheese but the sills feel pretty good. They have only been subject to eye and "tap testing" with a screw driver so far.

That valve with the 2 lines running from it looks like an air valve for air shocks. Follow the clear lines back to see what they connect to. Good luck with the rebuild it looks like the basics are there at least.

Let the work begin...

Nein_11 03-06-2014 12:57 AM

Oh, and note the 2 ignition coils because the P/O was too lazy to remove one before installing the other...

Flojo 03-06-2014 01:02 AM

what the hell... ?

everything seem... euh... so wrong?!

extra alternator? what M-code was that, hahaha...

and the body/rear traverse seems to be pre-74(?)

Its oh so very wrong... and shes a 68 so its a not so well done "turbo" look conversion? atleast it makes my back date easier...

Flojo 03-06-2014 01:07 AM

you got it.
it is predestined to be relounched as a nice RS replica (due to the flares).

my tip: stop worrying about little bits... rip it all out right away and rebuild and reassemble.

find yourself a nice spot, where it can sit for some time beeing jacked up so you can do the tear down at your own speed.

you will have about 20kg of spare junk left over *gg*

I am just waiting on my Engine + Transmission Jack and that will come straight out for as much work as needed (we shall wait and see) whilst i tidy up a few safety issues... Plan is to get her on the road as an ugly duckling until I can build up my desired body parts to do a good work on a backdate.

Flojo 03-06-2014 03:04 AM

well... in this case a semi-drop may be sufficient, as you can remove all unnecessary from the top.

two issues you'll have to adress obviously is:
a) why is there an external alternator (original seems to be still inside the rotor/fan)?
b) why is there a disconnected coil?

both probaly will reveal a different wireing that may leave you with a ruptured original wireing harness. so sort this out carefully.

when you start the bodywork, (that would be my timing) then pull the engine and then (maybe) go beyond parts deleting, as to e.g. refurbish all o-rings/gascets, clean it up, paint the engine tin etc.

Honestly, Iwould sell this"car"right away as it is. Too much effort.

Greets

Man I love this car.

If you like a challenge plus a good laugh or cry.

Please continue to remove the ghetto upgrades.

I think your only chance of a happy outcome is to buy a crashed car and swap the bits into your car. Porsche parts are scary expensive and you need one of everything.

Or sell it and buy a nice 911.

The P/O was obviously quite creative so I will have to sort out un-doing his inventions before starting to repair any issues. I am planning a full drop as that way I can address any and all leaks etc that will bother me as well as re-paint inside the engine bay.

I have another daily driver and a motorcycle, so this is just some fun for me as I have always loved these cars. This is more a learning experience for me to improve my skills and mechanical knowledge at the same time as building a great enjoyable car.

My Daily... (Slightly more reliable at this point)

ThomO, thats the plan! A good challenge wont be turned away by me and the plan is to have some fun along the way! I'm glad I am not the only one that loves it!

Bill, finding an affordable crashed car in Aus is almost impossible, at this point I feel I have enough of a basis to get this car going... But only time will tell!

Thanks for the input guys, you have been extremely helpful so far and I hope that some day I will be able to pass any knowledge I gain from this experience on to other people working on these lovely cars!

sportwagen 03-06-2014 12:35 PM

Oh a GT!
Definetely a fun-daily-driver.
Keep on going

weseeeee 03-06-2014 01:31 PM

You got the right attitude...go for it and enjoy the ride. I've witnessed much worse become an awesome toy! Good luck.

Rodsrsr 03-06-2014 01:57 PM

I dont think its that bad. The body looks decent and all you really need to do is switch it back to longhood and you'll have a nice RSR look. You'll need to go through the entire cars systems though which is what you would do anyway on a 46 year old car. Looks like fun.

theclaw 03-06-2014 02:21 PM

Sub'd. This is going to be fun!

ozracer 03-07-2014 02:08 AM

Wow i admire your dedication this is going to be epic there is an amazing amount of work in that car. I just dont see how you are going to get a it cleared as road worthy when amongst a million things to do you a have a floor thats swiss cheese. My suspicion is you are going to have to pour big dollars into this car just to getting it running and road worthy.......

Flojo 03-07-2014 03:22 AM

I guess its OK with some elbow greese... there's been many way more devastating builds than this.

the diy effort will tackle the $$$ issue ;-)

Nein_11 03-07-2014 01:44 PM

Thanks for the positive look on things!

I honestly cant see the body murdering me on cost its mainly the engine bay and "pretty bits" where i may over indulge...

As for sheet metal what brand do you recommend and can anybody note differences? Our host has Stoddard, Restoration Design and Tasker all at quite different price points. Has anybody used any of these brands or could shed some light on differences?

Only want to take care of the rust once! but still dont feel like spending $2300 on genuine Porsche sheet metal :)

Thanks, Nico
