The build begins!
Hi Guys!
So I've begun the process of stripping unnecessary crud from my 68 912-6. First on the list was the the ugly side skirts... 11kgs of weight saving! Turns out they were metal not fibreglass as i originally thought.. Anyways, here are some before and afters! Before: ![]() After: ![]() Couldnt be happier ![]() Now for the next one! Need to ditch the turbo spoiler :/ I understand how they are mounted and that I will be left with ugly holes until i get a replacement decklid, my only question is what are these fans underneath it? Aircon? I thought it was just to force hot air out but there are other lines running up there?? Heres a pic! Any help would be super appreciated. Thats the car that was for sale in Adelaide wasnt it? Those fans are not factory is there a condenser there for the air con if so I suspect they were used for that anyways you can ditch the fans for sure. Are you going back to a bare metal shell or drive and restore at the same time. Looking forward to your thread you have your work cut out for you...

ozracer, shes the one and only...
Definitely more work every time i turn around and look at her haha. I will be driving and restoring as I go but will be taking care of a new floor pan and any other safety concerns before i begin to drive again. I will look tomorrow morning for a condensor but i believe there may have been a small one on the LH side of the spoiler, where are these usually relocated? And i know she's going to be a lot of work but I am excited for my first big resto, and look at doing almost all the work myself. Nico |

I agree that they look like AC lines. I recently removed my spoiler and replaced it with a used deck lid and a OEM AC condenser. I had to have one of the lines refitted with a new connector but it was only a few dollars and well worth it. Good luck and take your time. btw, you will never be finished because these cars are fun to tinker with

Those fans should be blowing air downward, from the deck toward the engine.
They are for the Air Conditioning condensers. |

Found the huge condenser hiding up under there...
I have discovered that multiple of the AC lines are disconnected or split at some point and therefore I will be removing the system completely. I have no problem with driving windows down throughout the summer and it is more weight that can be shed! Another job added to the list ![]() Nico |

I pulled my A/C including condenser, all lines, mounts, wires, and switches from my SC. It's amazing how heavy all of that stuff is!

nein, agreed that would need a lot of work tp get the aircon efficient again anyway. there may also be another condensor in front of the petrol tank at the front of the car.
The receivers are usually in the front wheel gaurd on the passenger side. |

Beautiful, I have spotted them now, so provided I am removing the system is it wise to remove the lines running under the car or leave them for a future "change of mind" update on the system? Are they difficult to remove/replace? Thanks for your imput!

sorry to say... but thats one nasty looking 911... good you put some work to it and "clean" it off.
if I were you, I'd go so far as to backdate it in style to a clean pre-74 look, rs-type sort of hot rod. and the engine bay... shouks! what a nasty snake pit... go for it!

Shes quite the ugly duckling.. Shes staying wide that is a definite but back date would be my preferred look. As for the engine bay, just ordered the engine jack pin from our host to pull the engine out this week for a clean up. Fund's providing I am looking at getting a set of Zeniths on before I put it back together. Interior coming out this weekend and floor pan is getting a few patches and a clean up! Nico |

Is that an alternator that is sticking up on the left side of the engine pic? If so I have never seen that type of alternator set up on a 911. I guess the PO was pretty creative in working on the car. Great idea doing the backdate that is on my list of projects to do they always look so beautiful to me. But with the cost of these cars going through the roof it seems to be on hold for now.
