Basic CIS Setup Question
Ok so this is the most simple question but I want to make 100% sure before I go and screw something up. I recently got my CIS system rebuilt on my 1973.5 2.4. Now thinking that it would only take an afternoon for my mechanic to get to it I didnt label the fuel lines on the back of the CIS. So its 3 weeks later and I finally get my injection system back, well **** how do I put this back together. I found a diagram of the CIS injection system and it shows how it goes back in but I am not 100% sure about it so I decided to ask.
The only part I am concerned with, because I didnt label it, is that there are 3 nipples, 2 big single-ribbed and 1 small tri-ribbed nipples coming out the rear of the CIS, AS IT SITS IN THE CAR. Now what I understand is that the small tri-ribbed farthest left one goes to the fuel filter, the middle or left big single-ribbed one goes to the throttle body, and the right most or right big single-ribbed one goes to the return to the fuel tank. Is this correct? I would greatly appreciate it if someone could just go look really quick so I dont screw up my recently rebuilt CIS. Thanks alot. David

OK so now I have a new update. I hooked up my new injection system and now I have a wierd problem. When I start it the first time it runs fine and it will run for as long as I want it to. But then I stop it and try and start it again and it doesnt work. Whats going on? Anyone have a clue? Its like under fuel line pressue, from the accumilator, it doesnt want to start. I have experienced this under two occasions. The second time I just took off the fuel line for the fuel filter to the CIS and let the fuel drain out of the filter; and then it started right up. But after that I cant get it to start at all. Could it be that I am running to rich.
A little history...About 3 weeks ago it ran and I could start it but it was having problems in that the accelerator pedal wouldnt respond when the car was under pressure. I could turn off and on the car and it would give me power for about 15 seconds and then die. I dont know if this helps any but I hope it does. Also another side question is, should the car be able to idle on its own after it is warmed up and the throttle lever is push down to the floor, essentially turned off. Thanks Alot David

David............
I have a 1973.5T with CIS as well and yes the car should be running on its own when the engine is warmed up and the hand throttle down. If you need the throttle up to maintain the idle you have a mixture problem, or at least thats what happened to me. I bought the adjustment tool for the CIS and I would die on exit ramps off the interstate. I had to use the hand throttle to keep the idle going...................turned out the adjustment screw for the mixture was frozen and although it felt like the screw was turning only the tool was!!!!!!!!!! Drove me and the mechanic nuts. It was not until I took off the air filter, held up the sensor plate arm by hand and applied force to the screw did I realize the problem....Keep that one in mind............ After a few adjustments, it runs like brand new.............I did however, replace the cold start valve, airbox, pop off valve, warm up regulator, injectors, fuel accumulator, new hoses, etc. If your not getting fuel to the injectors its the accumulator, warm up regulator or your mixture. I do not go by CO mixture meters, but feel and performance now. This was an something a reliable and experienced mechanic told me who worked on older models. Be careful on adjustments because you can get serious backfiring and if you do not have a pop off valve...........GET ONE!!!!! Have the WUR pressures checked and adjusted. Fuel filters will clog easily if your tank is gunked up, so never let the gas get below 1/2. I change my filter every 5K as a precaution. I recommend "Marvel Mystery Oil" as it was recommended to me for these older engines. It been around since 1923 as a super top end lubricant and is added to the gas. I pour in 4-6 ounces every third or fourth fill up. Great stuff........ Get to the Technical Articles and pull up the CIS trouble shooting guide for great direction. Good luck Bob 73.5T |

Hi,
YOU HAVE ONE OF THE NIPPLES GOING TO THE WRONG PLACE! The middle nipple goes to the Cold Start Valve not the throttle body. The line that goes to your throttle body comes off of the top center of the fuel distributor as does the line for the WUR. In regards to the car running when warm, yes it should idle by itself with the hand throttle down. What you should do is back out the idle screw almost all the way and begin your adjustment from there. You may also need to richen up the mixture. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more info. -Dave |
