O2 sensor wire extension for SSI's?

I am getting ready to install SSI's on my 82 911SC, and want to have everything ready before I get started. I understand the wire for the Oxygen sensor is too short to reach the bung.

Is there an off the shelf wire extender for this, or will I need to fabricate something?

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,
Any small gauge, insulated (Teflon is best) copper wire will be fine,
if....you solder the connections, and use heat shrink tubing over the splices.
(And forget the BS about air "travelling" inside the wire!!)

Tom,

Did what Doug said six months ago and its working fine.

No indications of the air invading the wire and traveling up the harness so I guess its happy!

Hey, that reminds me. . .a few weeks back I suggested to Brad at SSI they should "Add a jumper wire to the package, to accomodate the O2's new position" . . ."it would be a big value added for the customer, with minimal cost to SSI."

Brad Roberts reply to me was;
"I'll put something together for you next Monday regarding the 02. Most people have this figured out. We placed the 02 for optimal reading not ease of wiring. "

per: SSI thread .

So Tom since your a guy like me who "hasn't figured this out" I'll send you an exact duplicate of what SSi "put together" for me.
Which was Nothing. . . but a slight. (Tom, did ya get the slight too? )
"Most people have this figured out." Really
My point was apparently lost. Saving each customer the process of thinking; can I find the right connectors for a nice jumper or should I cut and splice? just isn't going to happen.
So apparently Tom you need to fab' something.

Thanks Guys,

That is the answer I expected to hear, but it sure would be nice if someone sold one. I would pay $20 or so not to have to screw with it.

Maybe I will bring it to work, and get one of the assemblers to do it in a lab. I did this with the wiring for the switch for my oil cooler fan.

Really shows what experience does for you. She soldered on 2 wires, examined it, didn't like what she saw and re-did it, was satisfied and handed it to me. The whole process took about 45 seconds, and the solder job she wasn't happy with was 100 times better than I would have done, after screwing with it for 30 min. The best thing is it only cost me $5 for a box of donuts for her department.

Tom

Somebody makes the adapter plug you're needing. The B&B header system comes with one of these plugs. If you'd like to have the adapter plug, maybe call up B&B and see if you can get them to send you one or tell you where they get them? Yeah, fat chance, but good luck anyway.

Are you sure you can't just pull some extra slack through the grommet that is on the other side. Try that first.

Tom:

When I did my conversion, I used the SSIs from my 2.7 that happened to have the O2 bung. There was a hole in the 3.2 sheet metal right above the SSI bung that I used for the O2 wire rather than the hole near the 3 cylinder and the harness reached just fine.

What I am suggesting is to drill a hole in the sheet metal that will allow the lead from the O2 sensor to get to the connector from above the sheet metal rather than trying to get there from underneath and then up and around the sheet metal.

Brad,

Thanks for the offer.

I hope you didn't take this as a slam of you guys. My SSI's are new (as in uninstalled), but I bought them from another board member who sold his car before installing them. They have been in my garage for months, and it has been over a year since they were first purchased (from a place in FL, I think). I don't consider this to be SSI's problem, although I appreciate the offer. Like I said, I would be willing to pay for one if it was available.

Now if you guys want to still want make me one, I certainly wouldn't refuse it, and I would talk real nice about you

Tom

Didnt take it that way, and I hope that I didnt come across P'od.

I am a very cynical person and it doesnt go over well in posts or emails.

I have a FRY's electronics store about a block from our race shop in Palo Alto. The plan was to buy enough parts to whip up 100 or so for imediate orders. It took me awhile to come up with something decent that could be sold with the HE's.

The company (SSI) is slowly being brought back to life. Things are getting very exciting around the place as of late. I hope to lead SSI for the next 30 years with the same attitude and support that John has given for the last 30.

What Brad is doing is admirable in going out of the way to satisfy the end customers.

Just wanted to contibute what I did to extend my O2 sensor with my SSIs while keeping everything looking factory. On my 3.2, I measured for an extension of the factory harness exactly 9". I bought a new Bosch 3 wire sensor (think I needed one anyways) with longer wires, such as for a the late 80's Volvos and SAAB Turbos. I cut the wires of the new sensor down to length, along with the Bosch rubber/fabric sheath. Next, if you look carefully at the Porsche factory sensor, you will see that the connectors disassemble and you can desolder them from the old wires and reuse them with your new sensor. Don't forget to salvage the rubber grommet from the old sensor and slip the wires of your new sensor through it prior to soldering the connectors on the ends. The end result looked so factory, that I couldn't stop staring at it. I think even our overzealous Bosch rep, ahem, I mean tech, would approve because it allows the O2 sensor to suck for reference oxygen through factory Bosch manufactured wires.

Steve,

I honestly think most people are afraid of screwing up their O2 sensor by extending the wires or replacing it. I have to make injection wiring harness' from scratch for our latop programmable systems... so this stuff is a "No brainer" for me. I take it all in stride like nothing happened.

I still have plenty to learn about dealing with the different groups of Porsche owners.

Brad, you're probably right about that. BTW, do you have an idea at what the timetable is looking like for the Laguna project?

Thie biggest problem with the "Laguna project" is whether or not we will actually stamp the bodies or farm it out. Our machines will do it, but not at the rate we would like.

No matter what, its going to be a hot selling item.
