Desperately need muffler help!

I know my car is a FrankenPorsche but it is what it is. It is a 1985 Targa with a 964 body kit. I believe that the exhaust is also from a 964 as it is a right hand exit.

The exhaust that was on the car when I bought it was loud and had a hollow sound to it that I did not like. I was told to install a MagnaFlow 10416 muffler and it would be less loud at lower RPMs and give a more aggressive tone at higher RPMs. Well I had the old muffler replaced with the MagnaFlow and I hate it. It is much louder all the way through the RPM range and is almost embarrassing to drive. (Maybe I am just getting old, 43)

Can someone identify my old muffler and tell me if it is indeed a 964 muffler? Any recommendations on a new muffler that will be quiet would be great. Thanks.

Back of car with MagnaFlow installed

Your old muffler appears to be a stock STYLE muffler for a 3.2 Carrera. One could assume it is a stocker unless you find a brand name on it.

That being said, the MagnaFlow is obviously much louder due to the design.

Short of replacing it with a quieter muffler(think Corvair turbo style) there's not much you can do with it.

I have several mufflers, what is the back side of your muffler, does it have an indentation across the whole muffler for the air channel for the heat boxes? Its not a 964 muffler as they are on the right side of the engine in the quarterpanel.

Back side of muffler.

Appears that it was a one in two out at one time but was filled in.

Do you guys think this is a stock 3.2 muffler? Is it possible that the original owner closed off the original exit hole and cut a new hole in the other end?

It looks factory to me. The current outlet must have been made as the other side is where the factory exit is made. What type of heat exchangers do you have? How was this muffler connected to them?

Can you find a name or part number on the muffler?

muffler

Thats a Carrera muffler, one in one out..on the left end.
The Cat and muffler connects to the left side as in my pictures, although this is SC on your indent in the muffler is suposed to be a heat channel that adds air to both heat boxes connected with a 4 inch orange connector tube of impregnated rubber.

It hooked to the cat the same as your pictures. The outlet on the left side was welded shut and a tail pipe welded onto the right end. Will this type of modification work again or is the mod the reason for the loud muffler? I don't know what the inside of these looks like so not sure if changing ends for the tailpipe will work.

As I remenber the picture, the inlet pipe goes through to the right side then baffels back to the left. Youre dumping to the right basically on a straight through muffler.

Does anyone have a solution for my problem? I have a right side cut out in the bumper cover but want a stock sounding muffler. I have a stock 3.2 with stock heat and stock catalytic converter.

You could replace the magnaflow with a Bursch style muffler which would be quieter. A muffler shop should be able to easily install it.

Autozone/Advance/Oreilly's carry mufflers and they are pretty inexpensive.
