windshield washer tank drain

I'm in the process of fixing the headlight washers on my 83SC (I know, why would you want to do that, they're useless) and see what looks like a drain plug, but I'm reluctant to turn it for fear of breaking it. Plus there doesn't seem to be much to grab onto to do so. Also, it looks like the hoses have been hacked up by a PO and I'm trying to identify which one is original. I have a clear reinforced plastic (see close up of fuel pump), a shiny black plastic and what appears to be cloth covered rubber (probably fuel or vacuum line). Any advise/help would be appreciated. Warren

LMFAO Warren!

Funny that you would say "they're useless!" and still be compelled to work on them! (I worked on some useless things in my life so I'm party to such folly myself.) GO FOR IT! Since I do not have washers... I'm useless here!

Somebody must know about these things so I'm bumping!

So I figured that the clear reinforced PVC is probably original because those lines still had the factory hose clamps on them. The drain looks like someone melted the end of it to seal it off so not a big deal, I suppose I could cut it off clean leaving enough for a rubber cap to slide over the end. On another note, the pump wasn't working when I pulled it, but that turned out to be a seized motor shaft which I was able to free up with some WD. When I put it back together I packed a little synthetic grease into the seal so it wouldn't happen again. So the last question is for those who have operational headlight squirts, when you push the button down to actuate it should it run until you let off the button or should it just give you a brief squirt? Thanks, Warren

Found this by accident but the headlamp washer gives one squirt for each time you press the button and only works when the light switch is on.

I do not see why they are useless...they do the job.

Also worth adding that on my '86 the headlight washers will stop working when the washer tank reaches a "certain" level -- i.e. when it gets close to empty, only the windshield washers will be allowed to operate.

Thanks for the info regarding switch operation. Mine work as you described. They sure shoot a boatload of water when you activate them. Warren

I have a 78 and have the high presure washer pump on my car . Tose e-enforced clear hoses are in fact OE. My car has them too. When i press the button on my car with the lights on it does chuck out a boat load of fluid onto the lights . Empties the tank pretty quick . I always test just before washing the car ... coz thats usually the end result of using them anyway .

Also as pointed out the tap off the tank for the lights is above the tap for the WW pump an is well designed .. so you dont use all your valuable fluid to look through your windshield with , cleaning your lights.

My hedlight pump is a fairly large pump and really fires it out there as long as i am holding the button.

I want to replace my headlight washer pump because it leaks like crazy when used. A lot of water just leaks out when the pump is on. It might just be a bad hose but if I get all the way to the pump it is getting swapped. Just getting to the crazy thing is a challenge.

Do I have to remove the valence and the bumper to get to it?

The headlight washers are not really useless if you drive on long trips. A couple of years ago while driving in Utah it was drizzling just a little rain, just enough to make a heavy spray of gunk but not enough to get the windshield wet. I used the washers a lot. The headlights stayed fairly clean as well with the occasional squirt.
