Testing some Instrument LED

I installed a while ago in my SC a set of LED from Superbright. That was not bad for about $1.5 a bulb.

I also noticed a lot of postings about LED's which are much brighter then the SB once.

I did some testing to compare some of the bulbs out there.

Here is what I used.

No. 1 is the standard bulb which work with the dimmer.

No. 2 is the Superbright which is not bad, About $1.5 each, but they don't work with the dimmer.

No. 3 I found on Ebay Germany EUR 3.5o - these work with the dimmer

No. 4 New design with 3 small LED on top and 1 LED left and right. These work with the dimmer and light up the most difficult instrument, the clock, since it has the only one bulb on top.

Here is a picture with the clock and the Speedometer with the original bulbs.

This is with the Speedo with the SB LED and the clock with the standard bulb

Here an other angle

http://airboxer.com/images/tach-SB-L...-st-bulb-2.jpg

This is the LED from German ebay, the clock still on standard bulb.

This in the new LED set on the dimmer low

and here on dimmer high

Now this one is with the clock installed with the new LED.

Nice!

Where did you find #4?

wwest 03-25-2014 08:19 AM

Some of the instrument uses have a depth limit which would prohibit the use of #4.

I got the #4 LED.

I would make 2 set's available for testing, if somebody is interested.

The Clock is short on space, and need a spacer to set the LED at the right depth.

poorsha 03-25-2014 08:55 AM

Great stuff.
I need to follow this.

nineball 03-25-2014 11:38 AM

i would be interested in your other set of the #4 leds (depending on cost). my lights currently suck.

I just had a look at the ultimate LED thread here on Pelican - lot of stuff there.
Etarga's LEDs have had good reviews from Pelicanites.
Someone also linked this site Order Now Porsche

Rothaus can you provide a link for #3 and #4.

rothaus 03-25-2014 03:59 PM

The 2 set for testing are gone. Thanks for testing the LED's

I like to have some feedback before I offer them.

Thanks
Engelbert

DaSurfa 03-25-2014 04:08 PM

Wow #4 looks great!
I have SB's on mine and while they are better than the stock, it's still inadequate.

Engelbert put me on the list when you get more.

Mahalo,
David

rothaus 03-27-2014 12:25 PM

The test set's are in the mail.

Cheers
Engelbert

" Rothaus can you provide a link for #3 and #4."

" I like to have some feedback before I offer them."

Guess not.

RocketWrench 03-27-2014 01:31 PM

Are the origins of #4 going to be made public? I don't really care about the cost, I really need these LEDs....?

rothaus 03-27-2014 03:53 PM

Thanks for the response, I really wanted to see how others like them before I start selling them. However, if you don't want to wait, please PM me.

Thanks
Engelbert

I installed etarga's vintage LED's. They look great. The lower color temperature is closer to original and matches the HVAC panel's yellowish color. No fakey blue color. I

Update:

Here are 2 pictures with the complete set installed.

Here with the white

Now I have also the warm white or AKA Vintage Look. I switched all of them out with the white once. I personally like them both.

To save a step on PM's here the info about the cost.

They #4 LED's, with the LED on top and the 2 side LED's are $36 for the set (8 + one spare) includes also the spacer needed for the clock, and instruction, plus $4 s/h, total $40.

Here is a video clip to demonstrate the dimming of the new LED in the picture above. Thanks to Kevin, who installed these in his 914.

GaryR 04-21-2014 04:33 AM

Englebert, can you get the turn signal indicators in green LED?

rothaus 04-21-2014 04:59 AM

I will get some green and blue for the parking light indicator in the speedo, and high beam in the tach. I tested them in my SC and they work great.

I have not tested yet how they would work for the turn signal indicator.

These color LED will have only one LED on top since the only need to shine straight.

As soon I got them I will post some results.

Thanks
Engelbert

rothaus 04-23-2014 04:21 PM

I got again the bright white LED's.

http://airboxer.com/images/LED_BA7s_New.jpg

I now have also Blue and Green LED for the High Beam indicator and Parking Light indicator. These LED's need only on large LED at the tip, see picture below. They can be added to the Set of the multiple LED lights for $3 each.

KWIQSLVR 04-26-2014 09:00 PM

Just installed the white LED's and the difference is...night and day. (sorry, couldn't help it). They're really a huge improvement over the stock bulbs.

Rich Gas 04-27-2014 04:43 AM

These spam bots take a snipit from a post and try to make it look real...as you found out it redirects you to some bs site. You were lucky it wasn't something more sinister... Don't click on those... I'm going to want a set of your LEDs ...

glennanddenise 04-28-2014 04:14 PM

Pm'd as well.

tirwin 04-28-2014 06:36 PM

I installed one of Engelbert's LEDs in the clock tonight. Thought I would post a couple of pics to try to show the before/after difference. I'm very impressed!

The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. An excellent upgrade!

rothaus 04-29-2014 02:56 PM

Looks good !

Thanks for the feedback, just wait when you got them all installed.

Cheers
Engelbert

tirwin 04-29-2014 03:28 PM

Hoping to get the rest installed tonight. My daughter looked at it and said it was a huge difference. "Wow, Dad... that one makes the others look so old!" :D

ma356r 04-29-2014 03:32 PM

ROTHAUS. any Vintage sets left? Would like to purchase.
Thanks.

rothaus 04-30-2014 01:31 PM

All PM's answered.

I have both white and vintage white left. As well the green and blue.

Thanks
Engelbert

cwinters01 04-30-2014 03:59 PM

I recently ordered the whites and replaced my 5+ year old bulbs. I, like the others that have recently posted, am very happy with the outcome! Much brighter and I like the white look vs. the yellow...obviously a matter of preference here though.
Thanks again Engelbert,
Christian

Etarga has some good products,..for sure.

Best!

67 green gauges

will these work in the green 67 gauges? is the number of bulbs the same? also what about the colored LEDS for these gauges. Thanks

rothaus 05-01-2014 04:47 PM

I don't see a reason why these LED's would work in the green gauges. I have not access to test them, however, as long they are BA7s, they should work. I think the number of the bulbs for illumination is the same like for the newer gauges.

Maybe somebody can confirm this.

Cheers
Engelbert
