Pertronix ignition module sitting too high?
I need some advice please. My distributor part number is 0 231 184 006. The car is a '76 Carrera 3.0. I got the Pertronix 1867A from our host which, according to the packaging, is suitable for this distributor.
After taking the points out, the base plate screwed onto the moveable vacuum advance assembly perfectly. The ignition module then screwed on the base plate and the gap to the magnetic sleeve was set. The sleeve itself clicked into position without an issue. The rotor assumed its normal height on the distributor shaft above the sleeve. Everything went together perfectly. The shaft turns freely and there is no rubbing. Despite it all fitting into place, my ignition module is riding 50% higher than the sleeve. Pertronix faq says the module and sleeve should be at the same height. The sleeve can't go higher without pushing the rotor off and the module can't go lower unless I dispense with the adjustable plate and possibly even the vacuum advance and make some sort of a frankenstein hack mod. Has anyone seen something like this. Will the Pertronix pick-up not work with the current difference in height? I've found threads with the reverse being the problem, ie sleeve not being pushed down far enough, but nothing like this. Any ideas, recommendations or opinions welcome! (Sorry for the poor pics) ![]() ![]()

Should work, install it and see what happens. It's easy to work on with distributor installed in the car.

Pertronix has a troubleshooting guide on their web site which, I think, can be used to test your set-up out of the car by energizing the module. By the looks of your photo, if the module signal pickup is located low on the module it will be in line with the sleeve magnets.

Awesome, thanks very much for the feedback. Will give it a try and report back.
Edit: bench test as per Pertronix works fine. I trust this will still be the case at 6000rpm! Will only find out a little later. Time to drop my paranoia and trust the product. Last edited by Bear911; 03-26-2014 at 10:53 PM.. Reason: update |
