I found the Craftsman Rally Box works great!

Fits under the hood with a strut brace - no clearance issues. Has two drawers plus a top compartment with a moving tray. I've packed it full to bursting and no worries with tool organization or wasted space. I've gone the soft bag route and it has its pros and cons. For me, the steel box keeps tools where I expect them and can carry _lots_ of items.

I'll try and post a picture later.

Cris, my fear of the metal boxes has always been denting the hood from the inside. But if a good method of hooking a box to the crossbrace? Hmmmm. Do post a pic if you can, okay?

The kneeling pad

is the perfect item to place on top of the truck contents. I use a Mechanics wear foldout pad (four panels) that covers everything in the trunk just about perfectly and is an excellent barrier between all the track stuff and the hood.

Hit plenty of bone jarring bumps but no dents yet .

almost, but not quite...

I spoke too soon, the box you have image of is NOT the right one. You are looking for a two drawer version, not the three drawer. Sorry for the confusion...

When you find it, you'll set that it is a great fit, well made, as I fill the drawers to the max with wrenches, et al and they still open fine. and reasonably priced. Everything you need, nothing you don't .

I have a 3 drawer Sears box in my garage...I think it would be too tall for a 911 trunk, Jack...but the two drawer models might clear just fine. When the upper lid is closed, the drawers are locked closed.

Yes, two drawers will fit very nicely.

CBracerX? Notice that you carry all tall sockets...I carry standard, under the worries of clearance problems. But thinking about it, you could be right. After all, tall or standard, they all fit the nut. Evren, I may have done wrong in my tools selection...or not. These are the details we all worry about when putting together a "road kit". But other than the plug socket, all I bought for Evren were standard length sockets. Did I screw up?

Ron, THANKS! I think. I mean there just aren't that many places on a 911 where you'd need a tall socket, right??? Gawd, I hope so...

I carry both short and tall sockets.

I bring tall in 3/8 drive only, while short in 1/2 impact (9-24mm), 3/8 (6-19mm) and 1/4 (5-17mm).

Plus universal sockets in 3/8 (8-19mm). Also carry shortie (very useful!) and standard combination wrenches (6-19mm), plus a pair of 22mm combination wrenches for setting toe (cracks that jam nut easily). I have a Griots Garage socket board with three rows, this fits in the top of the box and allows socket wrenches to be stored in between the rows, then extensions, breaker bar and so on can be stored in the top tray.

Tall sockets can be useful when you want to skip using a short extension, for example. Not manditory for any 911 tasks I can think of off the top of my head, but you know the old saying about not bringing something to the track.

I don't keep a kit ready to go, I just pick what I need from my regular toolboxes when the time comes to go out the door. But the items are pretty standard, unless I am expecting trouble...

-Chris
