Dizzy rebuild
Group, Posting a new topic here hoping to attract a couple of the experts who can give me input regarding the positioning of my dizzy.
Engine is dropped and cleaning up. I go to manually crank the engine (clockwise) and the dizzy moves counter clockwise. Thats good. I go to line up the timing mark "Z1"and the notch on the body of the dizzy with the rotor and interesting how it will not line up. So I am not sure if previous owner put it in incorrectly or I am just not reading my instructions correctly. There is also a boat load of crud that I hi lighted as well. Not sure where that comes from or what causes that. Either way it looks like it's a good thing I am doing the dizzy rebuild. Any input or thoughts regarding the dizzy position and should I adjust the rotor to line up with the notch on the dizzy body when I reinstall it? Thanks for the input, Gary ![]() ![]() |

Ignition distributor alignment.......
Gary,
You could turn the ignition distributor to line-up the rotor close to the scribed marker. Look down at the stud that holds the distibutor in place. Set it as close as you get it now. The final adjustment should be done with the engine running using an inductive timing light. Tony |

OK, so I think whoever installed the dizzy is off one or more teeth. Pull it and reorient it so that it lines up with mark after you clean/check the dizzy. Than go ahead and set your timing again. Warren

Looks like it is off by one tooth as mentioned above. Pull it watching were it moves to as you remove it and move it a little towards the notch and re-insert. Might take a couple of tries to get it right.

Yes, I was thinking that is was off as well. And it doesn't surprise me based on some of the stuff I have come across while restoring.
Thanks a bunch gents. Will report back soon. Gary |

On my motor that is not TDC but 5 degrees before TDC. Mark to the right is TDC
just saying. Not sure what engine this is. Chris 73 911 E |

If that is the Z1 mark then he's doing it correctly.

I would check to see if both valves on #1 are closed, they should be if this is truly TDC, correct?

You might also find they changed the orientation of the plug wires on the cap bu one position to compensate

Ugly find
Should I trash the guts and start from scratch? I doi have the rebuild kit from partsklassic but it is so bad in there, not sure if it is worth piecing back together. Also the small piece on the bottom that holds on of the springs snapped off as well. Not sure if that is replaceable or repairable.
Calling on all experts to see if its worth salvaging. If yes or no, what else should be replaced and where are the parts sourced? Thanks all, Gary ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I would think a used distributor in better shape would be a better starting point.
I've never seen a distributor in that kind of shape; was this thing submerged for a period of time? |

Working on a flood vehicle?
I'd source a good used one.

Here's the crazy part. The car ran. I put 600 miles on it and I'm in the process of restoring. Just dropped the motor and am going through it. It looks awful. I sprayed it with some gunk and cleaner. I am surprised at the amount of corrosion that is in it.
![]() I did bead blast the housing and that is looking pretty good. ![]() |

Wow, that is nasty...
I would give the people at partsklasic a call and see if they can help. They do offer a rebuild service and may have the parts you need. Or find a good used one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Off to Klassik to a rebuild. Not much of a core refund due to poor condition of dizzy. Oh well.
Stay tuned and thanks for the input. Gary |
