Silly Bilstein Assembly question?
Hi,
Hoping for some help. I just bought a pair of Bilstein spindles that have been raised. I have the inserts and the covers. I don't have a bump stop....is there a different one to buy to help lower the car? Any other parts needed? Roll pin? I have never assembled one of these before. ![]() |

What year?
If a 3.2, There are no bumpers/cushions. As far as "bump stops" I assume you purchased "raised" spindled struts to lower your car, in that case, you need the bump stop kit sold by our host. Pretty straight forward swap of the OEM bolt then insert the bump stops( spacers ) then the longer supplied bolts. If you want to lose some weight, go to the Audi dealer and get some rubber dust covers to replace the heavy Bilstein metal dust covers. Sorry, forgot the part number. Jim

Thanks for the reply.
After an hour of looking I found this: Quote: Originally Posted by 87 clubsport View Post Steve, I check my car with revalve Bilstein insert without bump stop, just insert and dust cover, is it ok to run like this, also how to torque the insert to camberplate, impact wrench? use normal wrench will turn the nuts and insert shaft together. thanks You need those bumpstops to protect the shock from internal damage. If they bottom out, even momentarily, the piston at the end of the shock rod strikes the floating piston that separates the oil from the nitrogen chamber and they will mix. Instant dead shock.I use an impact gun to set the 55 lbs-ft, but I've been doing this for a long time and I know my equipment very well. You can use a set of channel locks (or big vise grips) to hold the concave washer and torque it to spec. __________________ Steve Weiner Rennsport Systems Portland Oregon (503) 244-0990 |

Well, mine and many others do not use the bump stop. You should take care where you drive in any case, like to low riders going over bumps. I am always cautious over bumps, screw the driver behind me they can wait.
If it bothers you, I would call bilstien and ask directly if it is needed or not, do let them know it was raised.

Called Bilstein...no answer. Elephant racing has them and the roll pin. Chuck recommends that they be used. Cutting them depends on the setup.
