Sitting since 2008 - 1979 3.0L Engine
I just bought a 1979 911 3.0 engine this afternoon. It has been sitting a since 2008. I have been through the process of getting an engine sorted that has sat for a long time before.
A few things are different; the CIS/injectors and the reseal of the engine. As a result I am looking for some advice on the following; 1. Which reseal kit? At this time I "hope" to not have to split the case. 2. Do I clean/test the injectors? Or do I buy new? I have a few more questions, but I will wait until I get these issues sorted first. Thanks! |

James, Bill of "Mr. Injector" in Dalton Springs Idaho seems to have a good rep with Pelicans as far as I know. I used him for a set of injectors---testing>cleaning>testing. Process and results were good. Forgot cost but do recall it being reasonable.

Hi Bruce, I am assuming it turns over. I will get it on Wednesday. I will put it on my engine stand and put some motor oil in it, rotate the engine on the stand, and make sure that the cylinders have oil in them as well. I may do this for a few days before I turn it over by hand at the crank.
These injectors are very unusual to me. It sounds like I can just get them tested and cleaned. I have a guy that is local who has been good to work with in the past. Thank you for the shop recommendation. |

I just did injectors, sleeves, and o-rings. The Bosch ones are not terribly expensive from our sponsor. I would just replace everything. There is a good video on YouTube if you pull the runners. I did mine in the car.

The injectors are not very expensive, but I wonder if I have to get new ones?
Do I need the engine gasket set and the head gasket set? Victor Reinz? Thanks for the input. |

Exercise the center pin in. The fuel distributor. Distributor removes easily on the engine stand
You may need to soak it in WD40 and apply air pressure through the center fuel line to move the pin. It’s easier out of the car Bruce |

That is the kind of information that I need. Thanks Bruce.
I just purchased, - Victor Reinz Cylinder Head Gasket Set, and Victor Reinz Crankcase Gasket Set - distributer cap and rotor - I will get the spark plug wires later - I like the Clewett wires and their cost is reasonable. |

The pin is supposed to glide in and out smoothly

I am not familiar with CIS. I will replace the fuel pump, and test/clean the injectors and do as Bruce mentioned for the distributor. Anything else for the CIS?

My concern about the fuel pump is the old fuel. The old fuel becomes hard inside. I would have thought it was the standard procedure for an engine sitting this long?

Fuel pump. Do you have an engine or whole car?

They more like fuel atomizing nozzles. The CIS is continually pressurized and pushes fuel through the injectors constantly. The change in activity of fuel delivery come with the addition of throttle, further opening the plunger in the fuel head and introducing a higher volume of fuel through the system to the injectors. Very basic "injection"...

Thanks to all who have replied. Bruce, I have many parts from all over the map. Tub from Mississippi, parts from all over. The engine was local.
Thanks Timmy, I will look into it. I truly know VERY little about CIS. I will clean and test the injectors, and hopefully the fuel pump will be OK. This is claimed as a "very low" mileage car - time will tell. Perhaps it is not that relevant, as this is the engine that I will be working with. I do not plan on buying another engine. I just put in my small garage; Last edited by jamesjedi; 10-17-2018 at 06:50 PM.. |

I have been going through the engine. I found this gap beside spark plug #1 hole.
The gap is between chain housing and case. I am not sure what to think? Last edited by jamesjedi; 10-26-2018 at 06:09 AM.. |

I believe thats just the way the valve cover is on the end for that cylinder. The cover should still be sealing the oil. You'll see it when you remove the valve cover.

Thaks for the reply! I have been waiting all day for someone to get back to me.
There is a fair amount of dirty oil in there. It did not seal it very well. The plug wire does not cover the hole very well. |
