Using three 48mm IDA carbs?

Might be a dumb question, but while I was thinking about carbs today I started thinking of using three 48mm IDA's. IDA carbs are $500 each and a manifold could be fabbed up cheap.

Just an idea...

Where do you place them so that the big hump of the fan still fits?
If you place them further to the firewall....the depth of the 3 carbs will add up to more room than you have.

The length of the intake runners becomes a problem as well. The 914s that we're converted to the single carb setup with the long intake runners never ran very well. OK of a VW Beetle, but not much else.

If you're going to use long intake runners, how about a Holly or Quadrajet, should fit better behind the cooling shroud.

$500 a carb for 48 IDAs? Sounds real cheap. Does that include air cleaners, linkage, fuel lines, and I guess you don't need manifolds.
All said and done you would be money ahead with PMOs.

BTDT, and it doesn't work. Air mixed with fuel really doesn't like to turn corners and one would have to design, test and build a VERY complex intake manifold to prevent fuel from dropping out and puddling.

I didn't think it was a good idea, but rather just wondering if anyone tried it... I'm still on the fence of ITB's and a standalone or just making it easy with some 46mm PMO's and a 12 plug...

As Steve said, plus the intake runners will ice up on a cool evening, making the problem even worse for the fuel trying to move into the heads inside.

We had a carter afb four barrel on a corvair, with this type of set up. uh... nope

I did an install of 2 SU carbs on a V8 once.
It worked really nice...the SU's have no accel pumps...so the piston in them varies the throat size to prevent "bog".
For a 383 it got very good mileage.
Perhaps something like that would work if the carbs wereplaced on short log manifolds with the carbs facing outwards?

if you do this, you may consider plumbing oil that's going to the oil tank through the manifold and use it to heat the manifold

this would make the manifold more challenging to build but that's part of the fun
