Project Hanna~ backdate 78SC wide-body

The lust to own a Porsche has took over control after watching, reading about the numerous Championships to the countless historical race victories through the years its time find out what all the fuss is about or maybe its just a mid-life crisis thing.

Either way several friends already own extremely nice 993's and not once had major issues, their trying to convince me this would be the best choice being its my first Porsche, yes I said it but we have to start some time right and as friends might say I tend to move against the grain so instead of listening too and taking their advice finding a nice turn-key daily driver, I've jumped in with both feet as I normally do "it makes me happy ".
Right here in the Pelican classifieds was a very clean RUST FREE 78SC wide-body roller (currently riveted steel turbo quarters in good condition, will be welded) calling my name wanting a second chance on life welcome "Hanna", dude I'm stoke'd.

Ok, enough of the blah blah already.

Ignore the 993 suspension conversion ($$CRAZY$$) My original plans was NOT going extreme suspension mods. seeing so many listings for complete suspensions it made me think. So just to improve and get the best the handling over the current worn out SC for what will mainly be a "DAILY" spirited (backroad) driver, trips to the Nurburgring and the occasional ADAC hillclimb events (yes, stationed in Germany) will be her main duty.

Engine choices are 3.6 motronic with G50 (reliable for all conditions) but, the thought of keeping it looker to period with a 3.0 or 3.2 carbs sounds good too (though I'm not that weekend tuner lets say) mating it to the 915 tranny (Magnesium cast) that I already have will save $$$.

Creating a long hood backdate with a ST look turbo fenders, flat deck lid and RSR bumpers. Not looking for Max high horse power numbers but, quick nimble and light keeping the $$$ down (budget minded)

Those Jack Oslen's and Wayner builds are in the right direction and once I source most of the work over here I'll be shipping the car back to Germany to finish the project. Currently deployed to Afghanistan to soak on Pelican info for a couple of months.

The ext couple of weeks I'd like to get the car to the body guys get it stripped, inspected and start on all bodywork and paint with hopes to have body finished by March. I'd like to figure out which way to go with the suspension before its painted.

All suggestions welcome

Still have 5 months in Afghanistan with a lot of free-time to expand the brain with Porsche knowledge. Anyone have suggestions for the best books about Porsches, rebuilds, restorations, general info and tuning mods and when I return I'll be fulling armed

Looks like one of Chris Nielson's cars. Here is his build thread on it:

911ST update 10/24

I don't think he ever says what color it is...it isn't is Porsche factory one though.

advice from some Pelican experts, would a complete turbo suspension including brakes, arms, steering etc be worth putting under my SC or would I be better off going through current suspension installing new bushings, upgrade brakes and other improvements be a more wise choice, and roughly what would a complete package be going for

I believe you can run wider rear wheels using the SC rear trailing arms versus turbo arms. Bigger brakes such as boxster upgrade are cost effective.

I remember seeing a restored pickup truck for sale that looked strikingly similar in color. I think it was a Ford of perhaps early '70's vintage.

Alot of work and money is going to spent trying to fit the 930 suspension ie the trailing arms into your SC chassis. The geometry is way different. The points where the trailing arms are tied into the torsion tube are different. The 930 are way beefier as is the torsion tube. IIRC ... You can cut out the old ones and weld in new adjustable rear camber boxes to get the suspension right instead of welding in a 930 torsion tube. Do a quick search ... lots of history on this one.

As for the ST you have posted give Cnielsen a PM. Its his car ... Hes pretty open and real cool dude. Here is a link to his ST build. Not sure if a color is listed in the 9 pages of thread.

Thanks guys for the suspension feedback, trying to keep this a budget build improving the SC suspension seems to be the best choice.
Chris's 911ST is one of the sweetest builds and hopefully with his expert advice I have a nice all a rounder. Hopefully the body will be stripped and inspected by January to see what I'm starting with.
