I did the passenger side CV joint approximately 10,000 miles ago and left the other one alone. I took the driver side joint apart to replace the boot and grease recently and noticed some significant wear. Instead of replacing the joint I just swapped it with the other CV joint on the passenger side so the load and future wear are now on the opposite side of the joint. A little like rotating tires.
It wasn't making any noise before replacing the boot but I'm sure it would have soon, we'll see how swapping it works out. There are a few threads that have information on swapping. Mine is an '86 so I can only replace the inner joint, the outer doesn't seem to wear as fast anyway.

Ok nevermind they both look like these. I'm going to replace both whole units so I can go back to driving then examine and see if I can rebuild the old set. Mine were noisy specially the passenger side (and felt loose when wiggled). Another question - do I need 6 gaskets for my 84?
