Any complaints swapping smaller wheel or wood??

Any complaints swapping smaller wheel?

It does not look like they make much in the stock 380mm size. The typical Prototipo comes only in 350 as does much of everything else out there.

There are some nice wood rimmed ones in larger sizes but I am not sold.

Any opinions?

For my 87 Targa Guards Red with black and tan interior.

Thanks

It's definitely a little more effort, but nothing too serious. Maybe a ~10% increase overall?

*edit* I see you are in the Philly area, you can try out my Protipo if you want.

Wood splinters, not good for an accident. Smaller diameters make the turn a little more difficult at low speeds and obscures the gauges. Most just tilt the gauges to the left to make the redline and higher speeds easier to read.

^^^ What he said

Abarth makes a wheel that is 370mm that looks a lot like the Prototipo.

See post #34 in this thread I started.

I still can't decide between the Abarth and the Momo Mod 07. Other projects have taken priority but this will get done before I AX.

If you ditch the stock wheel, you pretty much have to:

A) live with the fact that the gauges are obscured (in most cases, but not all)

B) tilt your gauges (no cost other than your labor)

C) shell out mucho dinero to have your gauges refaced with the numbers offset

Some innovative Pelican developed a procedure to DIY refacing the gauges (if you're brave enough).

Have not seen the Abarth wheel available in 370 anywhere.

Abarth no longer makes 370mm

There was much discussion about this in another thread, but the bottom line is momo supplies the Abarth wheel and one of the sources, Mr. Fiat claims they now only come in 350mm or 35 cm. Having said that, I already got the 350mm Abarth and installed it with the JWest eccentric hub which moves the steering wheel up so that the entire speedo is now visible. Unfortunately the spacer I originally got from our host did not work. Good luck! Updating the steering wheel is one of the easiest upgrades!

Well, nuts! Didn't realize that about Abarth no longer making the 370mm. I guess I waited too long to make a decision. Oh, well... such is life.

I think the JWest eccentric hub makes a lot of sense. I have been seriously considering that. I have the Momo Competition wheel now but I'm not entirely happy with it. I like the dish of the Mod 07 and the style of the Prototipo. If Momo would just make a dished Prototipo that was about 370mm, it would be perfect! The original Prototipo is perfect but those are mucho mucho dinero. For that much money, that wheel better make me a sandwich.

I recently bought a 370 mm steering wheel for my car. They offered many in 370mm. Most styles available in 350 mm are also available in 370mm.

I also have the JWest eccentric under my 370mm Abarth. It adds about the same amount of eccentricity as the factory wheel has. No gauge visibility problems at all for me, and plenty of thigh clearance too.

I also have the JWest eccentric upgrade. Big improvement, but I think I might add the Momo 1" spacer on top of that.

The woes of being 6'5".

Wood looks great but I sure wouldn't want to have one in a collision. Too dangerous. There is a reason they aren't offered on new cars

I got my Abarth (385mm, not 380) on ebay a year or so ago. You need to look not just the US site, but also the Italian, French, German, and English sites.

Short story. Many years ago I went to a PCA L.A. dinner meeting. Guest speaker was a CHP officer. Not long before he and his partner were called to a car accident. They discovered the driver of a British Sports car dead in his seat. Astonished, they didn't know why, until they saw that a sliver of wood from the guy's steering wheel pierced him directly in his heart. Ouch!
