Steering getting heavier?
Or am I getting weaker!
My steering seems to be getting heavier, less lively, than before. It seems gradual, not all at once. And maybe its me….I'm not sure, but I'm starting to worry a little. Here are the car specs: '88 Targa 89K miles lowered to Euro spec Original stock struts Aligned by very reputable Midwest Porsche shop Corner balanced to 30 lbs. LF weight with driver weight and full tanks Caster is +5.8 and +6.0 L to R respectively Camber is -1.0 and -1.1 L to R respectively Toe is +.12 both sides Turbo tie rods Bump steer kit 7s & 9s Fuchs 205/55/16 & 245/45/16 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, F 3/32" R 0/32" I need to put it on jack stands and turn the wheel lock to lock, see if I can feel or hear anything. Anyone have suggestion on what to check? Maybe just do some pushups!?! Thank you for your time.

Pilot Cups certainly won't make steering easy.

Check your tire pressures.

Second that on the tire pressures. And..do check your front wheel bearings. Just just did a full brake job with new wheel bearings. The original bearings were still there..and have been repacked sometime in the past..looked fine, and not too loose.
Steering effort was greatly reduced and improved after the work was done. Don't know why exactly. |

Both my 87 Carrera coupe and 82 Targa are stock showroom height and they both feel like they have power steering. At least that's what my neighbor tells me whenever he compares my 911s to his lowered 911s. Something to think about...

On my car, as the front tires wear, the steering gets heavier. I didn't realize how much until I put new tires on.

^ what Josh said. Big difference in the effort required with tires with more than 50% wear. Also big difference as tire pressure is reduced

Oil the universal joint in the steering shaft. I did mine a month ago and it made a huge difference. Mine is a right hand drive so it may be a little different - mine is located in the smugglers box.
