Fiberglass diet?
I want to knock a few lbs. off the old 1970T. Does anyone know who makes 'glass rear bumpers and valance for narrow cars? I don't have rear flares and don't want them. How about a 'glass engine lid? Thanks, Alex.

Fiberglass woes...
Alex - I'm right there with you. I'm resistant to rear flares as well, but have not seen anyone who makes a fiberglass rear valance and bumper for narrow-body 911s. That, and safety concerns, are the only issues that keep me from seriously considering putting fiberglass on the rear and front of my car. Nonetheless, check with gt-racing (gt-racing.com), and maybe they can suggest something. I haven't called them yet about narrow body rear fiberglass, but if you do, hopefully you can share whatever information they might have.
On a related note, I saw a post where TRE (tremotors.com -- I think) might be able to supply non-flared rear fiberglass pieces similar to what the flared 911s can fit. Problem is, TRE wants a sure sale of at least 10 copies of these pieces to merit making the mold. I would be willing to reconsider fiberglass if we had eight more people to do this with. Tell me what you think and find out. Thanks

I think link you are looking for is
http://www.wholesaler-usa.com/rennspeed/newparts.htm Rennspeed has a 911R rear that is narrow fender. I think all the major glass suppliers sell narrow rears, GT racing, AIR... On the safety issue, how much safety do you think the early sheet metal bumpers provide? Not much. They are more durable though, fiberglass will break from even minor impacts. You didn't say what weight reduction steps you've already take. Fiberglass is a fairly expensive and difficult way to cut pounds from an early car. It's probably 3rd or 4th level if you rank ease of removing weight. Check my recent experience with glass on an early car Project Elephant, How much does it weigh?

Chuck - thanks for the information
I read through the link you provided, wholesaler-usa, but did not see a fiberglass rear bumper/valance set for a '74 narrow body - which is what I have. Maybe I didn't look closely enough at what wholesaler-usa has, (I'll look again), but I didn't see what I'm looking for in this case.
Any ideas? Thanks. BTW: very nice work on your car!

Call Peter at Rennspeed. He's a very nice guy, but his web site hasn't been updated in a long time. He has a lot of stuff that isn't listed there. Tell him you're a friend of mine.

Cool
Thanks for the info, Jack. Lightening my car is the next step. I'm trying to work something out with Tyson so we can simultaneously rip out all ancillary stuff that concerns a once-civilized 911. I'm hopeful to do this around mid-Oct. Closer to Xmas, I'm figuring on fiberglass, though I have yet to talk to Santa. Whatever the case, if you have any weight-saving suggestions, please bring 'em on.
All the best
