86 Carrera - Smoke from Wiper Stalk Housing. Any Ideas?

Electrical smoke from the housing into which the wipers, light, cruise control stalks insert.

Very real wisps of smoke that lasted no more than 5 seconds. All controls appear to function normally.

Never happened before.

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance !

Do you have an after market Head Light Relay Kit? If not then your stalk has started to burn out. You need to take apart the stalk and check for shorts, this requires you disconnect the battery and remove the steering wheel.

Yes I probably do. The car has H1 headlights.

In that case what do you think it is?

If you mean the relay - no idea. I am the original owner and it was installed 28 years ago.

Possibly Hella but again not sure.

Did you read it? It is a thread on how to repair the hi/lo switch that burns up inside the turn signal stalk causing the smoke!

Search for J-West relay kit as well. It will explain the relay kit others are referring to.

Edit: never mind, it is your wiper switch that is smoking...
No lighting circuits in it.
Perhaps your wiper motor is overloading the contacts in the switch, causing the smoke, similar to what happens to the hi/lo switch in the turn signal switch...
Sorry, should have read the first post better, most of the time it is the headlight switch in the turn signals smoking..

But the wiper lever is in the stalk too.

Did she smoke when your turned the headlights on and the wiper switch?

Ok, must be an '86 model thing, my wiper controls are on the right hand side of the wheel on a different stalk. My GM has wipers and cruise on the turn signal stalk...

Now if the OP knew that the wiring for the different stalks runs through the clamshell housing that covers the column, and if that is where the smoke is coming from, he might be interested in reading about all the devices that could possibly cause the smoke.

So I had some time to spend with car….

I turned on the headlights and at first the headlights did not come on.

When they did they were stuck on high.

No flash available.

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. Definitely sounds like the headlight contacts in the turn signal stalk are a distinct possibility.
My suggestion would be to inspect them and either repair or replace the unit and install the J-West or similar relays to protect the circuit from future damage.
There are a lot of threads with great instructions here at Pelican.
The advanced title search is your friend.
