battery for a 911 coupe 3.2 1985

I'd like to replace my old mammoth battery with a new smaller sized.
What are the stats I should look at.
I don't do race and I don't use the car during winter.
Thank you in advance.

Pretty much anything will be smaller and lighter than the stock battery, so it sort of depends how much starting capacity you want, how much weight you want to save, and how much you want to spend.

Just like GTC said, it depends how big and how much starting power you want. I still have what I call "2 1/2 ton truck" battery on mine, but next time I will go smaller. If you notice there are 3 holes where your battery holder screw can be placed, you can see it when you remove the battery. So the next time I will go with the second one which will be a medium to small size, in order to retain cranking power but you could go smaller. I would look for a battery that can give you the same cranking power you have in the bigger one or at least close enough to it but yet a in a smaller size. Just my 2 cents...

I'm looking more for a smaller size than weight.
I'd like to spend $200-250
and as for starting power, how do you measure the power you need?
I'm looking at optima red?
and I realize I'll need to custom mount the new battery.

I installed an Optima red top 34R with the cutting board mounting solution

Mounting an Optima battery

The 34R has the reversed terminals so it fits with the existing cables.

I used the template posted by Barrpete above. Purchased the 1/2" black cutting board from Target and mounted my Red top optima in my 87' 911 last year. Looks great and fit perfect.

I had the Optima Red in my 1985. Worked well and cannot spill or overflow, a big plus. Same battery they use on the F16.

Here's what I did

Put in an Optima yellow top. Got the mounting plate that fit the optima off of eBay. It was a perfect fit!

Follow nineballs thread
Lightweight and half the size. You can find the battery on eBay for about $140

I've got an Odyssey 925 in my car, with a Rennline mount kit. Was in the car when I bought it, but seems to be a decent lightweight alternative. The Odyssey is about 25 lbs.

How about those rennline mounts, are they adjustable?
Has anyone installed one with a different battery than the odyssey 925?

Another vote for Optima Red Top with cutting board mount. It was my first mod!

Thanks Guys, I found you here. My 1986 has been sitting for too long. Battery DEAD. I went to my mechanic and he pulled out a new Interstate off the self. I told him you guys said a smaller battery would be fine. After looking in his book again, he gave me a shorter battery... also an Interstate.

After removing the old, the new one slipped right in. I will need to secure it, but I will be bringing in the car for some service.

With a cloud of blue smoke, the car started right up... It's been sitting for about 3 years.

I plan to get her registered for the summer!

I went with the Rennline Odyssey mounting kit and an Odyssey battery. Done.
