NOPE, never heard that one!

'Soap and water' doesn't clean off axle grease very well!

I guess if he was only concerned with brake pad dust ... it might be OK. I generally spray down first with Windex to clean off the pad dust ... then hit it with Brake-Kleen or equivalent for final cleanup to a grease-free condition!

Hi, I've never used break clean.. will it hurt painted parts?
such as painted rotor hubs and calipers..etc....
I know this is a dumb question..My breaks seem to be fairly clean
all the time.

TIA

Brake Kleen is pretty good stuff since it dries with no residue. In my experience, it does not hurt most things, like paint, but perhaps one of us should read the can.

BTW, I found a long time ago that the first step in doing a drum brake job is to remove the drums in the driveway and hit the brake parts with the garden hose. Generally, it makes the brake parts clean as a whistle before you even touch them.

i am not gonna trade in my solvents for a bucket of water and some soap

i just thought it was interesting he would say that

he went on to say "dont use the sticky stuff that reduces brake squeel"

anyways i was amazed
oh ya he kind of looked like spock and never smiled

I probably agree about the brake squeal goop. The way to minimize brake squeal is to keep the rotors and pads CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN of grease and oil. Grease attracts dirt and dirt is what squeals. So, handle brake parts with nitrile gloves if possible, to avoid getting finger grease on them. And clean EVERYTHING thoroughly with Brake Kleen. Chances are, they won't squeal. Unless they are race pads. Race pads like to make a little noise.

BRAKE Kleen is for cleaning leather, not BRAKES.

Lexol works great for brakes.

Yeah, and after you use the Lexol on the rotors, be sure to coat the new pads surfaces with Swepco moly-grease. Seriously, you should go back to that guy and ask "Then why do they call it brake clean?" I'm sure you will get another comical answer.

Spray rotors & pads with a teflon lube. They won't squeal. You won't stop, but they won't squeal.

I'm wondering if he was refering to the gooey coating that comes on new rotors; why else would you ever have to clean rotors??

For that stuff, I use whatever's handy. Brakeclean if I've got it, glass cleaner otherwise. Pretty easy to tell when it's off.

Maybe the "don't use Brake Kleen" comment had nothing to do with its cleaning abilities. Maybe it's bad for you to breath.
