1973 911 T - Flares - Yes or No??

Hey guys - I am finally getting the car stripped down and repainted this summer. At this time I am thinking about getting flares on the car..I have always wanted to keep the car ORIGINAL - but have seen pictures recently with the same care with flares and it looks awesome.

Any thoughts on how it would impact the value of the car by adding flares??

No no no. The value willgo down. If you sell it, the new owner will have to revert it back to original.

Not sure if T's are up to 6 figures yet. I do know a friend of mine sold his RS clone based on a T for six figures, but it had turbo brakes and a 3.0 liter andial twin plug engine.

If the rear quarter panels are original or at least don't have any bondo or rust then I would suggest keeping it original. Otherwise go for the flares. If the car is original then you could consider selling it and buying someones already completed hot rod.

I have a 73 911E that received carrera flares. It was done well and I like it, but if I were to do it again. I would not flare it from a value standpoint. If you do flare it keep the original flares.

........it kills me when I read of a new owner who wants to take an original car and chop the darn thing up!! If you want to add flares and thats in your liking do so, but do not forget the front slantnose fiberglass kit as well and the green neon under body lights, etc, etc, etc.

YES it was change the value of the longhood if you add flares unless your intend is to do a RSR tribute.

Its not going to go any faster with flares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One reason the long hoods are so valuable (actually, the main reason), is because they have that vintage look. Flares detract from that. I better look is rolled fenders with tires that just fit.

Flares were a factory/dealer option. That is not a valid nor reasonable assumption about future value.

I have owned the car for over 5 years, so not a new owner and have done everything to maintain the cars originality. Although, I did find an original 73 air conditioner and put it in as i live in Florida and can't not have AC.
I have taken things slow to make sure I do all my research before making a decision. The reason I asked is my mechanic who only services Porsches said to do it and that it would NOT hurt the value of the car because it was just a "T". So - hence my question.

I'm all for making a car look better, and flares look good on that car. The wider wheels would be a no brainer of course. However, what I would do is sell your car and get some big bucks. Then buy a car already with flares or one you don't mind hacking up. Then you will have money and something you enjoy looking at and driving.

Do non destructive mods, suspension and custom offset wheels. Engine upgrade and mothball the stock one.

I am about to hack up a 72. The car has bad repair damage in the rear quarters and its a semi-rusty hulk roller I just picked up. I don't feel one bit bad about it either and the value will certainly be higher than what it is now.

Each case is different. I would not flare a car just to have flares. For the amount of money spent in body work and paint you could do custom offset wheels and almost fit the same amount of rubber footprint.

Do what makes you happy.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO, the prices on original 911's are going through the roof, do not sacrifice what sounds like a great original car as they are getting HARD to find.

I cant speak much to the car on the right but the one on the left (is awesome) and belongs to jack olson im sure you know that. However that car was built to be a 1/2 a track car and the flairs were added to allow wheels that could put down the power of the engine it has. If you are just adding the flairs for looks I say dont do it. It wont mechanically add anything to the car (maybe bigger rear tires if you want) but if you are not racing it keep it stock!

Regards
Dave

The choice is yours ultimately. Do you want to look at it in the garage/driveway and drive it once on the weekend and wait for that big payday when you sell it or enjoy driving the car the way Porsche built it.

I too enjoy looking at my 72 but I put my money into upgrades. Regarding rear flares, I really wish I had put SC rear flares, the small ones, just for larger tires and a more aggressive look.

My 72 has upgraded, brakes, front and rear suspension, 3.0L twin plug and fiberglass hood and ducktail. You may notice Cobra rear view mirrors.

This is America right? Look past it, if you like it - do it as many of us will only walk this path once.

I wouldn't add flares unless I was going to upgrade the engine too. A stock T with flares and big tires is a poser car in my opinion.
