Engine deck lid problem

I have a 1974 911 Targa that has an engine deck lid "issue". I can't keep the deck lid shut if I install the engine deck lid strut (shock) or the engine deck lid seal (rubber seal that mates the deck lid to the body when the decklid is shut).

I've tried adjusting the latch, but I'm not quite sure what needs to be done and I don't want to mess things up. If I install the rubber decklid seal, I can't shut the deck lid (it doesn't "latch" and if I install the deck lid strut (shock), the deck lid opens at the first bump I go over. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what to do next?

Pretty much impossible to advise without being there to see it. It's really just a trial and error thing. You have to adjust, test, adjust, test...........When learning, make small adjustments and record what you did. That way you can backtrack if it gets too wonky.

Thanks for the advice, that's what I thought, but I wanted to check and see if there was a "quick and easy" fix for this that I wasn't aware of. I'll go and try it now. Thanks again!

Mine would pop open all of the time. In my case it was because the male post on the deck lid did not go all the way down and lock into place. I loosened the nut on the male part and then screwed the male part down about a half rev until the lid stayed closed.

Another thing you might try is to lube up the latch real good with WD-40.
Make sure the spring that snaps the jaws shut is in good condition, and make sure the cable is not binding up and holding them open. You could try moving it by hand to make sure.

Or you could put a big ol' nasty Turbo Tail on it. It wouldn't come up then.

Yea, John 70T is right. I had to clean the jaws and also adjust the clamp wire to complete the fix on mine.

Hello

Pull the latch release string and grease/oil the guding tube in the body. If the release string has to much rust then renew.

Then look at your Locksystem, sometimes they have a edge or are worn up. Don´t put grease everywhere just some good stuff on the right place.

Then you have to make the base adjustment on the lock by screwing the plunger in/out and if needed moving the part to the correct position.

If you have mount the plunger "upside down" your locksystem won´t work correct. The plunger is a bit off center and has a slight angle.
Mostly the problems are from the release string so start with that before you get lost on the more complicatet to descripe things

I made the adjustment that Philfran recommended and it worked like a charm! It took about 3 or 4 turns and the post extended a little, obviously enough to catch the plate enough to keep the deck lid from opening. I drove over a few railroad tracks that were guaranteed to open the decklid and it stayed shut. It opens when I pull the latch, that's a bonus!
