I think they blew it when they told me 2k to put a new pan in and just inflated some of the other prices.

CAN you post a photo of a $150 distributor cap. I am very curious to see what that looks like.

Yeap, when I was a Noob, paid a similar bill when 2nd grenaded on me and did a while it was out. Thankfully I did my own engine pad removal. BUT NEVER EVER AGAIN!

I know more than a few of us felt this pain Brother HH

unfortunately if not mechanically inclined, you're at the mercy of these wolves. They're not all bad but if they smell blood (little mechanical knowledge) a methodical feeding frenzy will occur on your wallet.

I believe they call it a "home run" or "keeping the lights on"

I once had an invoice for my VW GTX with an $85 distributor cap and I asked for the reason. I was told it had a special suppression plastic shield and that's what they cost. found out they would buy the correct $15 cap and take the suppression shield off my old one. Clever but unethical!

and now that a good Carrera with 3.2L is going for $30K, they will charge you those prices knowing it is only 1/3 of the value of the car.

Start building some tools and skills. Have fun.

The majority of the crowd here are DIYers, at least to a certain extent. Their MO is to save as much as possible on repairs so they can then spend it on performance upgrades. . Unfortunately, you paid the same amount as the cost of a complete rebuild. Was it unjust? The parts prices for the most part (distributor aside) are about right, except for the 2 times they had to gas your car up for 'test runs' to confirm their repairs. But their labor is the shocker. Labor is always the majority of any bill but yours seems high by about 50%. I would look for another shop, and ask the people here who they would recommend in your area and they will steer you right.

And hopefully this will be your last repair for a while, but with an older car, don't count on it.

I don,t see anything really out of line. I am a retired mechanic and you paid retail for the parts and other than the rust repair for the front end (which is very hard to estimate until you are into it) you would have paid more at the dealer. Labour of 6-7 hours for a clutch add another 8 for the oil leaks seems about right too.
The wire set for instance from Porsche is more than $800 so your $250 is an aftermarket set. The clutch kit at $1000 would likely be $1400+. The cap at $150 seems high but maybe the dealer was the only local supplier.
Remember Porsche parts prices are often ridiculous which is what keeps our host in business (and supports the factory racing program LOL)
Did you have an estimate going in? I just did a clutch in a 993 and the estimate from Porsche was 10 hours . It added about 6 more to clean up leaks and change the spark plug wires while the engine was out. I had estimated about 15 hours combined.

That's what I thought. Looking at one receipt 5100 + 2917.55 + 130 + 339.87 = $8487.42 which is quite a bit less than the total on the receipt ($11,074.38). That difference is almost $3k!

It's not easy to follow what is going on with the different pics but that math on that receipt is most certainly wrong.

Buy a Bentley manual, Wayne's 101 Projects book, some basic tools and ask every dumb question you can think of here. Working on your own car is both satisfying and fiscally prudent. I realize it's not for everyone BUT, fair price or not, I would've coughed up a hairball when presented with that bill.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

The $3000 difference appears to be for rust repair/replacement of the front pan. I see the labour for replacing the pan at $2500 the pan and gas tank support are shown on one parts list.

Couple of things that jump out at me:

Why $750 for clutch labor when the motor is already out for leaks? And, exactly how did they fix the brass oil lines for $600? I would think a shop would replace them or nothing?

There are two receipts. 3k for the pan is a good deal, some other parts are suspect, but you live and learn. I wish I had 12 g's to just plop down like that, so its all relative I guess.
