SC Engine drop
It seems I have an engine drop ahead of me as the clutch on my 81 SC seems kaput.
I have some research & searching to do on the site to gain from others experience before I undertake this project. If you know of some good threads that go through the steps of an engine/trans drop that can help me plan this out, please post em on this thread. Thanks... |

This is my suggestion to you how to get this job done efficiently and safely. There are countless people who have done this procedure successfully in many different methods and techniques. So find out who you want to be your mentor or adviser from this post. I am sure there would be many that would volunteer for this job. There is a post in the engine rebuilding about 'first engine drop' and thread went up several pages with too many good and questionable suggestions.
Choose a couple of guys who you feel comfortable communicating and discussing about the project. Ideally, it would be nice to have someone present during your first engine drop. Either your mentor or a friend. If you need an engine yoke, I could lend one to you. It (yoke) just came back from Germany. Keep us posted. Tony |

I just completed my first porsche engine drop on my 1977 2.7 CIS. Took me about 8 hours with many breaks to double check the tech articles. The most time consuming and nervous part for me was jacking the car up to and down from the 24" height at the torsion tube covers. I used two floor jacks and wood to lower the engine and transmission with the help of my father. I removed the rear valence to gain some clearance.
I expect reinstalling the motor to take less than 4 hours. Btw, I'm 29, but have been working on European cars since my early teens. |

I have reviewed many threads and found lots of great advice. This forum is great.

First sort out how you are going to raise the car far enough and support the engine/trans as you drop it. Without the 'proper' (ie first time - nothing fabricated) gear, this will be about the most time consuming. From memory I need about 30" clear of the bottom of the rear bumper. Or you can gain a bit more by removing the bumper. Depends what turns out easiest. The height you need will depend on how you finally support the engine/trans to get it out. The job is fairly straight forward. Don't be scared of it. 2nd/3rd time around is a piece of cake :-)

I just sent you an email w/instructions for removing and replacing an SC engine. When I did the job the first time, I wanted a check list to make sure that I wasn't forgetting anything.
