Are 1972 911T desirable?
Ive been looking around and they seem to be deals out there for these cars... what do enthusiasts think about the oil doors on them.... I know its a matter of taste, I like the unique look of it compared to other years... what is the general consensus of the 1972 model? TIA

I had a '72, sort of wish I'd kept it, very nice simple cars

IMHO, the '72 is the most collectable of the '69-'73 series, categorically across the T, E & S models because of the forward-mounted oil tank, strong 2.4, and MFI for the T, too.

I just now took a look at the Hagerty Insurance price guide. I compared 5 years, 70-74, and pulled the "average" value as a comparable value.
70t - $40,650 71t - $40,650 72T - $37,267 73T - $38,150 74 - $16,564 So, maybe you are right. They do seem to be a smidge less than the surrounding years. I always thought they were a little more collectable because of their 6 doors. I kinda like mine for the novelty. As you can see, a "middie" takes a real hit.

I personally like the one year only oil tank/door and 2.4 MFI engine of the '72 models.
Along with the chrome trim that went away with the '73 model.

thanks guys...
Nice Targa Bill.. so, they did not come with "deep six" fuchs. What year did that go away? Looks like 7x15 to me... |

Banned but not out, yet..

Early car enthusiasts consider the 72s as one of the best balanced cars because of the oil tanks location. Surprising that it is not reflected in the value but there is a difference between collectors and enthusiasts

I think they could come with 5" steelies, 6'/7" cookie cutters or Fuchs. I've no idea which Fuchs...

Why is a 73 worth more, are they referring to the first part of the year that was mfi or the second that is CIS? The third door alone has to be worth 5 grand more than any of the other earlier models, I don't get it.

You could also get them with 5.5 x 15 Mahle Gas Burners.
I'm pretty sure Cookie Cutters started in 1973.

Personally, I like the uniqueness of it. They also used the forward mounted oil tank on the very rare 911R (without a door). Does is handle better? Probably not discernibly different. It is more of a novelty IMO until you have to replace parts that were only made for one model year. Maybe that is reflected in the pricing?
If I were choosing between equivalent '72 and '73 cars, I would go for the '72. But in reality, you are unlikely to find two equal cars (condition, mileage, price). I'd put those factors above an oil door.

IMHO, they are more desirable. I looked long and hard for the 72 T coupe I currently have. I am still kicking myself for selling two prior 72 cars I owned, especially my old 72 E targa.

72T's are the best of the T's. First is the MFI, second is the oil tank location. First seen on the R then on the 72 and back with the 964. The stock Fuchs was flat 6.
