While replacing balljoints recently I expected to find a tapered pin that retains and clamps the ball joint spindle into the lower end of the front strut (Boge, 1969). What I found was a treaded bolt that threads into the strut and clamps up using the threaded portion of the strut. Was this standard or has someone modified the strut by tapping the clamp up boss?

the early struts clamped the ball joint pin, the later struts had the tapered pins. I dont know what year the change was made, but my '69 is similar to yours

Tim, thanks. If you have ever changed your ball joints, any idea what torque the bolts should be set to. I changed mine and torqued the bolt to what I thought was spec -34ft/lbs. I realized this wasn't creating much clamp up when the spindle started cluncking around in the boss.
