Strut tower brace
I'm thinking of putting one on my. 81 targa for better handling on the auto cross and de events car is already lowered with a bit of camber on the rear
Are the strut tower braces worth it. ? Do they inprove handling ? Also how to adjust these things ? |

I had one for 10 or 15 years, just took it off a few months ago. I can't tell the difference.
I think the trunk space is more valuable than the brace. |

Me too. Not for 15 years but several. I like the trunk access without much better. Mine was(is) a clamp style that attached to the strut tops.

In my experience, I upted the entire suspension on my Targa, the most significant was the "Targa Brace" my track Buddy did not believe me until he tried my car for himself. Unfortunately it is no longer made but you can build it yourself for around $80. More likely than no the Targa Brace was the final piece of the puzzle to tie the entire new suspension together.
If on a budget, I would do Trunk and Targa braces, lower to Euro Height, align and corner balance and go from there. Search my Name and Targa Brace, I posted the site and parts list for the Targa Brace DIY.

So my guesses is it's not worth the money for the results ?

This has been debated before.
It has made a difference on my car. However, I'm running 225 50 R compound tires on the front. I also have raised spindles, hard bushings, Koni race shocks, and I put tension on my strut brace. On my old flexible long hood, I can adjust my camber with my strut brace. On your '81 Targa you may notice a difference at an autocross depending on what strut brace you use and what other mods you have made.

Here's just one of many threads on the topic of strut braces . . . like many subjects here, there are widely varying opinions, often with no data other than emotionally or subjectively based suppositions, and nothing remotely resembling a general consensus. Personally, I like them and have never once thought mine interfered with stoage space, and in fact, can work as an anchor point to keep stuff from sliding around in there (like groceries

Think of the strut brace as another placebo. An alignment, on the other hand, will make a difference.

If your only add on is the strut brace, answer is No. Liken to buying only new HiPerformance Tire.

Well heck it looks cool and the RennSport logo isn't for nothing. I haven't noticed any difference either, but I'm into cool!

Don't confuse chassis rigidity with ride stiffness. Not the same. Most people wouldn't feel the difference between a Targa and a coupe unless driven aggressively back-to-back. Even then, lap times vs seat-of-the-pants would be more definitive.
For example, most any modern unit body chassis is more rigid than an early 911 chassis by many factors. As for a strut bar, in most cases, it's mainly an accessory with some validity when used in a track car. Sherwood |
