Heat of the garage
My '78 SC sits in a garage that has temperatures that can and do reach 100 degrees. The car can be garaged for a week or longer at a time. Will this harm my 911 in any way?

I don't think so, better then being in direct sun/uv's, now that will harm your plastics/finish. Maybe add some vents to circulate the air??? At least disconnect the battery.

Just make sure it's not too humid to prevent rust issues.

Thanks for the replies. I'll see about some ventilation in there. On disconnecting the battery, why would this be a good idea?

Our baby's draw about 6% per day, you don't want to end up draining the battery. 100 degrees will not effect the battery in normal use.
Just disconnect the negative side only.

Looks like I'll be disconnecting a battery in the near future. Thank you for being so quick to respond!

Or better to get a trickle charger.

I built a detached garage when I lived in Alabama. I kept my 911 in there year-round. Temps in the summer would sometimes reach 115 degrees.
The car was fine. I was more worried about spray paint cans, carb cleaner, etc. ![]()

This is a good idea and advice. While I was living out west, I put a Battery Tender in mine. I would usually not drive it in the winter unless the days and roads were clear.
Well worth the $$$'s

Our humidity is generally in the 25% range, so rust will never be an issue here. So far, in twelve + years, my summer-stored SC has not shown any deterioration of any kind. It is currently waiting for October!

My only worry could be either to much humidity (trapped in a closed space) rusting the car or to little drying out the interior fabrics. The temp is not a big issue, the engine heats up above that so everything in the engine compartment should be fine. I drive my car on 100+ days with no issue (aside from running a bit hot) so you should be fine.
Regards Dave

I really appreciate hearing all of these experiences and advice. I can rest a bit easier knowing the car will be fine. I also like the idea of a battery tender. Now about that spray paint stored out there.....Guess I'd better find a cooler location to store it.

Consider getting the C-Tek 3000, it will also maintain the battery by disulcifying ( spell check ) it.
As far as the cans, maybe under ground or in ground in a crate or sorts?

Living in Arizona I'm concerned about the heat as well. Keeping it out of the sun long term, as mentioned, is probably more important. Extreme UV can really play havoc on everything.
Because it's so dry here I make sure to keep the rubber trim, vinyl and leather all conditioned.

I just looked up Wetumpka, Alabama on weather.com. Hot as blazes but humidity not too horrid. Houston is 88F and Wetumpka is 93F (ouch). But on the upside Wetempka only feels like 97F with 60% humidity.
![]() I lived in Houston and had a detached garage. Hip roof. It was essentially a sealed cube. It would get smokin' hot. I put two soffit vents on each side under the overhang and two of the standard el-cheap-o roof vents in. Maybe $50 in total. Made a difference. I doubt the battery will be an issue but you can get one of those bayonet type (negative) battery disconnects for $10-15 at the local car parts store. Pop the hood and lift the blade.

On any typical hot sunny day the surface and interior of your car will exceed 110F anyway... nothing you can do about it. Having your car in the shade (ie a garage) helps avoid UV damage. My biggest concern anytime I put my cars away is moisture/humidity inside the car. When I park my cars in the garage I always leave my windows open an inch or two, or the sunroof open part way to allow circulation, even in sub zero temps. In the past I've had carpet start to smell like an old sock because they were wet and the car was closed up tight. Mildew hates air.
As far as the battery... if you think 100F is hard on one, try starting your car when it's -40! Unless you are leaving your car for a month or more don't sweat it. The clock and stereo memory don't use that much.

In Florida I have an attached garage and use a car cover and then a car bag. Zips closed and isolates the car from humidity and everything else. . Just make sure car is completely dry before zipper closes. Otherwise you'll close in the humidity and get mold. Worked great for me for years.
