89-94 rear window seal OK in 88 car with 88 glass?

Will the standard '88 rear window fit OK with the later (89-94) one-piece rubber seal?

There's plenty of discussion here regarding the fitting of later front windscreens and seals into pre 89 cars, but I can't find anything related to the rear window.
I am about to do a total repaint and retrim of the car and I already have the later front rubber and glass organised. It would make sense to change the rear seal to the later type as well, but I don't really want to use a 964 rear window if I can avoid it.
If the 964 glass is slightly smaller, a spacer in the window groove (like a wire) might help it fit better.

Anyone been there?

I'm interested as well. I'd really like to ditch the alloy trim on the rear seal.

I've replaced the rear side window seals on my SC with 993 seals.
Worked out great. The 993 seals are (were) cheaper than the pre 89 seals.

I used stock SC side glass, not 993 glass.

Bill, there is a thread out there somewhere. I think if I recall for the rear window the glass needs to match the seal. 993 glass and seal works, according to what I recall, as well as 964 glass and seal. Let me see if I can find and post the link for you.

Thanks for those links Emery. They didn't turn up in my search - getting the search text right is a bit of a black art sometimes.

It seems like most who have played with the rear window have used 964 glass as well as the seal.
However I did find one thread where someone used early rear glass with a 964 seal. They used some wire as a spacer in the glass groove of the seal to make up for the smaller early glass.
I'd love someone to confirm that this will work.

930 is running well, but unfortunately no longer in my stable. I'm currently getting ready to repaint my 88 Carrera and drop in a 3.6.

I used google advanced search and searched on this forum and the predominant reply is old window not compatible with new seal.

I agree, it seems that the consensus is to use matching seal and glass.
However, there were a few references to using early rear glass with 964 seal if a spacer of some sort is used to make up for the smaller size of the early glass.
A couple of posts mentioned that the 964 glass was about 5mm larger on all sides.

Does anyone have a rear 964 seal lying around that they could measure?
I'd like to know the depth of the glass groove.
I figure if it is something like 15mm and I put a 5mm spacer in the bottom of the groove, the remaining 10mm should be enough to secure the glass.

While we are at it, can anyone confirm the thickness of rear window glass?

Now that I have finally got my engine running, my thoughts are turning to repainting, so this subject is becoming relevant again.
I already have a 964 rear seal - just need to know how to make it work with an '88 rear window.
