Unusual engine code
So here's my current mystery. I bought a 77 targa converted to slant nose yesterday, and I can't seem to figure out what engine I have. Should have been a 2.7 according to vin 9117210595
However the numbers by the fan are *3280888* and 930/06 930/06 indicates 3 liter *3280888* I find one reference to, here: Porsche Engine Numbers But that points to a really early motor and doesn't match the 930/06 Here are pictures ![]() ![]() ![]()

Is it 930/06 or 930/08?
In the /08-case: 3.0-liter 911 SC engine for Japan

RedBook says its from a 68 911 coupe #3280001-3281606 (901/14) which is probably what you have already found. Could it be a replacement case restamped to earlier number?

I have no idea what it could be Haha. I'll tell you (although I come from 2 944s), it's got a lot of pep.

Post number 6 here is my situation: Engine number question 74 911S targa
The case may be from 68, but if that's the case then it was restamped 930/06? Making it...? Unknown without a teardown?

Ah hah! Notice under the slash in 930/06, there's a 9 ground off.
New theory is a service part restamped

Pulled the motor out for valve adjust.
It has 4 journal cams which I'm told makes it 3.0 2.7 distributor and cdi box. I'm still in the process of learning about 911 motors, and this one's thrown me for a loop!

The 930 101 103 4R casting number would be SC. Serial number makes no sense. Case would not be a Porsche restamped '68.
Tom Butler gives a nice overview of engine cases. r case designations

It's clearly NOT an early chill cast case because the longitudinal fins are missing, among other details. The casting number is wrong, too. It has a 2.7 exhaust system (one of the worst available) I suspect the numbers have been altered, or possibly it was an unnumbered case that had numbers stamped to suit the needs of the person who installed it. I think the 930/06 is authentic, I doubt the actual serial number is. Per the specs book, all 6 cylinder engine serial numbers of that era should have as the first digit a "6". This is clearly a "3". The second digit is a "2", indicating a ROW engine, the third an "8", indicating a 1978 model year. The last 4 digits indicate the "0888th" engine in the series.

Made on a Friday after lunch. Too much beer in the stomach of the tech who stamped it.

The 930 101 103 4R is part of the engine case original casting, but all other stamped numbers are suspect.
Any chance it was a '77 3.0 Carrera case?

I seem to have a faint memory of engine serial numbers preceded by a star indicate blank case stamped as replacement engine?
