How much would it cost to convert a 993 or 964 Tiptronic to a Manual?
I know it is relatively straightforward on the earlier 60/70's cars, but what would it require on 993/964 911? Anyone ever done it?

Are you serious? Why would you want to do that to an original car?
Aifter parts, pedal assembly, hydraulics, starter motor, probably new axles and of course the G50 and alot of work. I would be surprised if it could be done for less than 7k. Better sell the tip and buy a manual - afer the conversion you would still be stuck with a tip converted to a manual. Who in their right mind would want a car like that? |

They did a story on this in excellence. I think LA dismantlers sells a 'kit' of the parts from their wrecks. I have seen it advertised. It will not be cheap.
You would have to buy the tip really cheap to make it worth while. I think it would be worth it, You would have to give me a tip.

Depending on where you live, there could be emissions testing issues. The VIN is in the computer and the state may not let you smog it with a different type of tranny.

A change from Tip to Manual will increase the value of the car more than the cost of the modification!!! Not to mention the fun of driving it!!! You will see that the prices of used Tip cars are WAY below a comparable manual. Who would want a sluggish 90's automatic in a classic sports car? NO-ONE!! Except if they have a lame left leg... LOL!!!!

Trust me, my "handle" came from making this huge error in buying a 911. Buy a Corvette if you want a slushbox. |

As long as Porsche is continuing to sell more PDK's than manuals, the prices on used manual cars will just increase. This is even more true for the air cooled cars, the old Tiptronic is just another hydraulic torque converter slush box!
Again, you can get an aircooled Tip for cheap, and the value of the car will increase more than the cost of Tip to manual transformation! And who cares about matching numbers? Does some random numbers on the engine and gear box increase the driving fun? I don't think so! Unless you have a museum car, but then you won't drive it anyway! One of the big problems woith Porsche today, is that their (PDK) cars drive like an automated sports sedan, and that the automated sports sedans drive like (PDK) Porsches. There is no genuine raw sports car feel anymore (save the GT3 and Turbo S). They are all smooth, quiet and comfortable two door "sports sedans", and not raw sports cars. It's the raw sports car you want when you buy an aircooled Porsche, not a Tiptronic slush car. Then you should buy a Lexus instead! |

I think the kit to convert on Ebay was advertised at $8k. If you did the work yourself you might get out under 10K. Maybe some of the old tip parts could be sold? Cant be much demand. I dont think sticks are a $10K premium over the tips? That is a lot of money for the conversion. If I was given the tip car I would do it, otherwise probably sell. In fact IIRC the car that they converted in excellence was passed down from the father to the son.

That Tiptronic 993 or 964 would have to be CHEAP to justify a conversion.
There is strong evidence suggesting Porsche will be producing a new 'entry level' vehicle with a 'basic' 16 valve 4 banger and some serious HP, less expensive and smaller than the Boxster, for the purists out there who want to get back to the more raw driving experience. I believe this will include a manual versus a PDK, which they are all but discontinuing based on limited production. Thank Gawd!

I see no problem converting a tip to a manual and if I owned a 993 or 964 tip I'd look into it soon after obtaining the car. Matching numbers? A properly done manual trans conversion will sell quicker (everything else being equal) than a tip on any given day.
So what if you're a few thousand into it to get the conversion done. How many thousands are spent on 911 mods that really aren't required but enhance the driving experience?
