Remove rear shelf to replace rear speakers ?

I am in the process of reverting the aftermarket speakers installed by the PO to the OEM speaker grilles.

The aftermarket rear speakers housings are very tall.
Some of the rear screws are only 1" below the sloping rear glass.
No screwdriver is getting in there.

I am assuming the PO had the rear deck removed in order to install the speakers.
How do I remove the rear deck so I can gain easier access to the speaker screws?
Thanks.

Rear parcel shelf is held by a center bracket which the parcel is hooked. what I did on my 86 was push the rear parcel upward to unhook it and dont recall any other screws bolted to it. Hope this helps

I have a 1/4 inch drive that can hold a screw driver bit . I bought mine at home depot in the tool section, you can also insert a 1/4 driver bit. that will work for you. I just used mine to install the front speakers tonight

It is possible that the screws for the rear seat leather straps have some part in securing the parcel shelf... I have a parcel shelf in the basement that I can photo to give you some reference. PM me if you need a photo.

On my 84, there is a hook on the lower midsection of the vertical panel. Push up. and the panel comes out. On mine, there are also two screws, one on each lower corner of this panel. They must be removed to push upwards.
Good luck,
Dave

here is a shot of my targa with the real parcel shelf cover removed. you can see where the bracket is in the middle. on my panel there were also 4 screws to remove, one on each corner of the face of the panel. they are marked in the next photo of the newly recovered panel before installation.

I have speakers on the rear shelf of my 84 Targa. I had to remove the shelf in order to run two wires from the engine compartment while installing a third brake light. There are screws holding in the rear shelf which are the screws for the leather straps that hold the rear seats in the upright position. There is also a "tongue in groove" type restraint on the vertical portion of the rear shelf so that after removing the screws, you must first lift the rear shelf straight up a bit and then pull towards the front seat.

My questions about the removal of the rear shelf were answered on the "3d brake light" thread. Sorry but I'm not able to provide a link to that thread.

You need a low profile ratchet with screwdriver bits like this one if they are screwed into the rear deck, otherwise remove the four screws shown above and the entire deck trim will come out.

Before posting, I had already tried my ratcheting bit. No go. Thanks for the replies and photos. My rear panel had 4 screws and the center clip. It was very easy to remove once the way was pointed out.

As for my speakers, unfortunately, you can't really go back down to a smaller size once a larger speaker grille has been screwed into the deck. So, what I've decided to do is to spray paint the silver aftermarket speaker grille (in the photo) to flat black. The raised platform is already black. This all black combo should tone down the flashy modern silver grille.

Thanks again.

Hi, Can anyone help with a similar problem: trying to remove my 2005 997 I need to remove the rear shelf that houses the rear Bose speakers so I can renew the rear shock mounts. Its plastic covered in carpet and I can not figure how to remove it. Thanks
