Installing Rear Seat Belts in 911 SC

My 79 911 SC had no rear seat belts. But I have small nephews, and they need to ride along! I had read that all SCs had rear seat belt mounting holes, so all I needed to do was put in some belts.

I acquired a set of belts on eBay for $75 and was faced with the big question. Where are those darn holes under the cloth! I ended up tearing out one seat cushion because I couldn't find them. Hopefully this post will keep you from needing to do the same.

The holes are nearly facing each other across the seat. Beneath the cloth layer, there is a foam of some sort. Around each bolt, there is a round hole through the foam.

Outside edge (Passenger Side)

Center edge (Passenger Side)

Take a push-pin and poke it through the fabric to locate the bolt hole. You will know you have found it when you don't encounter any foam layer, and the pin goes entirely through.

Outside Edge (Driver Side)

Center Edge (Driver Side)

Be aware that the fabric layer in my car might have different seams then yours. In the case of the outside edge, go about 6 inches in the direction of the metal bracket (see the picture).
The inside bolt will be nearly directly across from the outside bolt. Both bolt holes are deeply recessed in the "corners" of the seats.

Once you have found the holes, cut a small slash in the cloth layer and you should be able to feel the threading with your finger tip. Then carefully oil up the bolts and run them in and out of the hole to ensure they move smoothly.

Then install the end with the spool on the outside edge, and the latch on the inside edge.

Make sure to use the provided offset sleeves, with the larger sleeve on the outside edge. Now you have rear seat belts! Load up the little ones and ignite a new generation of passion for speed! (For best results, use a Targa.)

Post if you have any questions about placement or can't find the holes. Good luck.

My 79 came with just one seat belt in the rear. Right side has the belt and the left side a blank plug. The carpet on the belt side shows evidence of the pivot and the blank side is undisturbed as well as no bunching or pulled carpeting. Looks to be factory.

Wonder if there were different combos available by market or custom order.

The cleanest solution is to use a pencil type soldering iron to melt the appropriate size hole in the carpet and underlayment. Use you locate the proper point with the tip of an awl, simply push the soldering iron through and move it in a circle to make the right sized hole.

My 78 came the same way. I too wonder if there were different combos or special orders for rear seat belts.
