Battery cables warm, is that normal?

Noticed that the 3 medium red wires coming off the positive battery terminal are warm/hot. Never noticed that before. Fuses are fine, not blowing.

Car keeps cutting out ( seperate thread), trying to exclude this as a clue.

Is this normal? I plan to look for shorts, but for all I know this is normal, and I just noticed.

Before I start looking for issues, can someone let me know if this is abnormal?

Thanks.

I don't think it's normal, maybe others can chime in. I'd be looking for possible suspect grounds and other areas of increased resistance (connectors, fuse block, etc.)

1988 930... It has the 3 red wires coming off, 2 are paired. I understand these feed the fuse box, alternator, and ignition. I plan to look for shorts when the weekend comes up, assuming this is abnormal.

Any reason 2 of the wires are joined, and 1 is by itself?

Thanks for the input.

Bo

Heat means resistance!
So...if any wire is hot..it can be one of two things....wire too small for current flowing....or....connectors not flowing 100% (resistance in the connector joint).
My look on it...figure out how much current is going to go through the wire...check the chart for wire guage needed and length of run...then use next bigger size just to be sure.
Also...make sure your switches are clean and working properly.

Clean up the connection to the positive and negative terminals as well as the main negative cable ground point, apply no ox grease and see if it goes away.

The red wires terminate at different bus locations on the fuse panel.

Please see my other thread, on my car running super rich.

Turned out the thicker of the three wires was getting super hot. Friend recommended changing the crimp on the end. I took off the heat shrink, and the wire was very frayed. I changed the connector, and it seems my running problems all went away. I hope.

Thank folks, glad it was something simple...

Just read your other thread in the turbo section.
Too bad you didn't mention the ends of the cable turning black in this thread, that was a big clue.
Anyways, glad you found it.
