Selling a 3.0 SC engine?

What is the simplest way to go about selling my 3.0 SC engine? It has 90K miles, runs perfectly and has great leakdown #'s. Any ideas? The e-bay thing kind of scares me. Is that the best way to go?

If it was me I would try the Pelican and Rennlist used parts boards first and see if you have any luck there before you try ebay.

Dumb question: What would that engine be worth anyway?

Well, consider a rebuild (non doityourself) will cost about 8K, I would think the SC engine may be worth at least 7K?

i am in the market for a SC...preferaly early but I see yours is a 83...

I'd maybe use eaby to stir up some interest...contact bidders off ebay...set a price...complete the sale, and end the auction early...that way you only pay the fee to post the ad...and not the commission in case it is a deat beat

also the 7K quoted above is a bit optimistic...you have to realize someone can go out and buy a 3.6 liter for 7K a 3.2L for 5K so a 3.0L would be below that...even though your engine sounds like it is in great shape...it will be hard to get someone to pay more then 5K even for a fresh motor

I paid $4500 for an '81SC 3.0 in excellent condition with 89,000 miles this past June if that's any help. $3500-5500 seems to be the range. Post on Pelican and Rennlist first before going to ebay, since first these boards advertisements are free and second a real Porsche enthusiast makes a better buyer than someone on ebay (I think).

I don't remember the F2P thread. Can you tell me about it?

Sounds like a good motor; like anything else it is "whatever the market will bear", always a little luck involved, ie. someone with cash happens to be looking for one when you are selling, etc.

I would call the respected Porsche salvage yards, (Parts Heaven, Oklahoma Foreign, etc.), ask them what they sell good SC motors for and adjust accordingly. If it has stock exhaust and original studs, I would think that $4000.00 would be doing well, but I haven't actually shopped for one. (My SC already has an engine). As for the "here's what a rebuild COULD cost" angle, that is not how it generally works out for used engines, but good luck anyways!

I paid what amounts to about 5K for a 1980 motor with 45K original miles on it. There was a motor core trade, plus labor involved, but the 5K is close. If you have the upgrades, SSI's receipts, etc, you can probably get 4500.00 or more for it.

4.5 to 5k tops

3.0s and 3.2s are coming down in cost because the 3.6s are available. 5 to 5.5K is what I'd expect for the engine and an exchange and full install. Interestingly, I'm willing to bet you could sell your 3.0 more quickly than someone with a 3.6 who has to also face the cooling issues and upgrades associated with a 3.6.

Why're you selling it anyway? This isn't another Ferrari2Porsche debacle, is it? That poor guy wasn't sure what he wanted to do.

I just sold the 3.0L out of my '78SC to a fella in New York.
Didn't advertise anywhere. He knew through this board that I was doing a swap and contacted me. It sold for $4500 delivered. A very good price given the updates and mileage:

'78 SC 3.0L Euro w/~85,000 mi
- aluminum air box with blow off valve
- SSIs and custom 2 in/out muffler
- carrera tensioners
- Sachs clutch with ~10,000 mi on it
- no smog or A/C

You have to make some concessions in price to cover the unknown when dealing with used engines.

The motor is in his car (a '77) now and running very well. We both are pleased and had a good experience.

Speaking of F2P, thanks to you guys he reneged on the offer to send Sarah and me a couple of dash heater knobs he had laying around. They were going to be free mind you! Thanks to all the humiliation you poured upon his head we were forced to spend upwards of $2.89, that's each mind you, for these knobs.
