Thumbs up Going on a 2000 mile road trip - what to bring??

So I'll be going on a 2000 mile road trip through the interior of BC and into Alberta with my 1980 SC. Anything in particular I should bring?

Have the usual assortment of tools, jerry cans, and assorted bits and bobs like fuses, relays, fuel filter, fuel pump, alternator belt... Anything I'm missing?

This is interesting to me since I will be making a one way trip from Long Island to Florida in October. I have been thinking about what to bring as far as spare parts and tools go. In my case I am relocating the car to my primary residence that is now in Florida. Long Island will be a place I visit in the summer time for a few months. This is a list off of the top of my head.

1. fan belt
2. distributor cap and rotor, spare external voltage regulator
3. set of plugs already gapped and special plug socket wrench
4. Inductive Timing light
5. starter solenoid jumper switch (switch with long wires and alligator clips)
6. CIS pressure gauge set and spare 3' high pressure fuel hose and assorted hose clamps
7. multimeter and a pair of long alligator jumper leads
8. assortment of fuses and spare red black relays
9. portable laptop with PET and Bosch CIS technical data
10. any hard copy Tech manuals you may have
11. A hard copy of my wiring diagrams with any mods I have performed
12. 2 jack stands, wheel chocks
13. hydraulic car jack (1 or 2 1/2 ton) which ever you feel comfortable with and will fit without causing damage
14. Jack pad
15. engine/tranny oil drain plug allen wrench
16. complete set of metric allen keys
17. complete set of metric socket set ( I have a nice craftsman set with 1/4, 3/8 1/2 ratchets and open end wrenches in a compact case)
18. a few screw drivers and pliers
19. vise grips and several adjustable wrenches
20 small car air compressor and tire gauge

My list may be overkill but it will give you something to think about. I have spent the last two month putting my car back together and I have used all of these items.

My brother in law just did a 6300mi road trip with a 2005 Acura TL, 223k, that has never had any mechanical work other than oil changes and brakes. (yes, really)

And he didn't change the oil before, during or after the trip...LOL

If you're '80 SC has seen love, routine maintenance, and most importantly...routine driving, you'll have no issues.

Godspeed

Inspect your critical items before leaving then travel lightly. Proactive beats reactive every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

I love these threads. Why not install a trailer hitch and pull a U-Haul trailer full of garage tools with you if you are that paranoid! Haha

80SC is pretty solid. If you give it a tune up, oil change, and once over before you leave, then all you need is gas, AAA card, cell phone, and your luggage.

I keep the car in good running condition so many of the things that make other people's lists fall into my "why the hell did you LEAVE with the fuel line leaking, brakes worn out, etc?" grouping. Here is what I would bring.

1. AAA card (or applicable where you are traveling), cell phone and internet access device. No one is more helpful than the Pelicans when you travel.
2. assorted hand tools including small voltmeter, some wire to make a jumper(s) with, duct tape, electrical tape, lug nut socket, fuses, relays including fuel pump relay, proper European base bulbs for tail lights/etc., and zip ties.
3. A couple of assorted size clamps, CV joint bolts. Those seem to be odd/hard to find if they back out and are lost.
4. Fan belt, a quart of oil, fuel filter.
5. A piece of cardboard to lay on. Put it under your carpet in the front trunk and forget about it until you need to lay down in the gravel.
6. Scissor jack with a few wood blocks as pads. I prefer this to the factory jack any day.

Almost everything fits into one small too bag.

That's about it. These are solid cars, not some namby-pampy over-rated flaky exotic. I've driven mine damn near everywhere.

Great call on the timing light, thanks!

Surprised no one said it yet, but at least in my case, a cooler of beer should do the trick...

Fan Belt, multimeter, jumper cables, and one of those little mechanic sets with screwdrivers and small sockets and pliers.

Maybe, refresh gear lube before you go or at least check for proper levels?

Take allot of breaks, remember she is an old gal and need to rest not to mention you too.

This is a good post and list.
The cars I have seen break down most often on long drives are the garage queens that get driven the least.
